Job Description:

This position will support efforts to develop and highlight community activities provided by KUCDD.

50% - Assisting with research project development and implementation, including activities such as:

  • Assisting with identifying research needs and important research questions,

  • Assisting with recruiting participants,

  • Supporting data collection preparation and training activities

  • Conducting interviews and focus groups with support from other researchers,

  • Managing data (e.g., data entry) with training on study protocols and procedures,

  • Supporting virtual and in-person trainings preparation and delivery

  • Participating in reporting findings at conferences and meetings.

30% - Support development of materials about KUCDD research projects:

  • Develop consumer-friendly descriptions of services and projects provided by KUCDD to share with stakeholder community groups (e.g., self-advocates with disabilities),

  • Assess accessibility of materials for research projects, (training materials, presentations, recruitment materials)

  • Assist with development of content (written and video) pertaining to research or service projects at KUCDD

  • Train other staff to participate in material accessibility assessment

20% - Other duties/activities:

  • Educating students and trainees about the lives and perspective of people with disabilities

  • Represent KUCDD at events with community partners (e.g. Self-Advocacy Coalition of Kansas, Disability Rights Center, Kansas Council on Developmental Disabilities) focused on educating stakeholders

  • Provide clerical support such as scheduling meetings using Microsoft Outlook or Doodle polls, typing meeting notes, making copies, scanning documents, etc.

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma OR GED and related experience or classroom study, as described in application materials or interview

  2. Six months of experience working with people with disabilities or their families, as described in application materials or interview

  3. One year of experience using email, as described in application materials or interview

  4. Experience developing clear and concise materials using Microsoft Word or PowerPoint as described by application materials

  5. Strong attention to detail as described by application materials

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Associate’s Degree or related college experience

  2. Previous experience developing materials for research (i.e. manuals, training guides, presentations, online training or similar activities related to research project)

  3. Previous experience working in a self-advocacy organization

  4. Previous experience working as part of a research team or participating in a research training program

  5. One year of experience with self-advocacy or membership in a self-advocacy group

  6. Experience working with key KUCDD community partners such as Families Together, Kansas League of Autistics, Kansas Council on Developmental Disabilities and Disability Rights Center

  7. Previous experience using social media to share research information

Position Overview:

KU Center on Developmental Disabilities (KUCDD) is seeking a Research Aide to support research activities to promote self-determination and community engagement for people with disabilities across the life course. The person in this position will work on research projects to assist with several activities including: helping with planning, conducting, and sharing research (e.g., recruitment, data collection, data management, virtual and in-person trainings); developing consumer-friendly written and multimedia materials that will be used by people with disabilities; providing administrative support; and increasingly supporting research activities in collaboration with KUCDD investigators.

This position will also work with local and state-wide advocacy groups to coordinate research activities between KUCDD and the groups as well as report back self-advocates’ perspectives on KUCDD activities and projects. The ideal candidate will have experience creating consumer-friendly written or multimedia materials for a variety of people, including those within the autistic or intellectual developmental disability communities, be highly reliable, pay close attention to detail, and have experience using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint and email programs.
