Job Description:

70% - Provide writing support to students; assisting them with the process of developing drafts, revising papers, & creating PowerPoint/Poster presentations.

15% - Maintain accurate participant records by completing Writing Consultation Logs for each participant and submitting them to the Program Director.

10% - Develop a thorough understanding of the program’s overall goals and assist the students with tasks that will help prepare them for graduate study, including support with the GRE analytical writing component.

5% - Other duties assigned by program director, including encouraging and supporting McNair Scholar Program’s mission of preparing underrepresented students for graduate study.

Work Schedule:

Monday 1:00-4:00 pm, Tuesday and Thursday 9:00am-12:00pm, and office hours (held at the discretion of the writing consultant)

Required Qualifications:

  1. Have earned a Bachelor’s degree in any field.

  2. Current graduate student at the University of Kansas.

  3. Strong knowledge of multiple writing styles and citation methods for various fields (APA, MLA, Chicago and etc.) as outlined by application materials.

  4. Ability to maintain organized, detail-oriented records and documentation as evidenced by application materials and verifiable with previous employer(s) (i.e. attendance, log of writing consulting sessions, and appointment logs, etc.).

  5. High academic aptitude (demonstrated by transcript).

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Previous experience reviewing or editing (i.e. through course instruction, teaching assistance).

  2. Previous work with undergraduate students in teaching or advising capacity.

  3. Technical research report writing in STEM fields.

  4. Previous experience with TRIO students or similar population.

Position Overview:

The University of Kansas McNair Scholars Program (https://mcnair.ku.edu/) is seeking two Temporary Writing Consultants. The successful candidates are individuals committed, in theory and practice, to the principles of equitable educational opportunities. They will serve as writing consultants and will work with undergraduate students participating in a summer research internship by providing writing support to students. They will also assist students with the process of developing drafts, revising papers, creating presentations, and other duties assigned by the program director. The writing consultant reports to the Director of the McNair Scholars Program.

The McNair Scholars Program (a part of the Achievement & Assessment Institute’s (https://aai.ku.edu/) (AAI) Center for Educational Opportunity Programs (https://ceop.ku.edu/) ) is located in Lawrence, Kansas. This is a temporary, part-time position from June 3-July 31, 2024.
