Job Summary - Maintain transportation infrastructure and drainage systems in city right-of-way following current safety standards. Assist with the operation of the water distribution system and equipment and operate plant and equipment to treat wastewater in compliance with United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the State of Kansas.\ Responsibilities -

Role and Responsibilities

1. Extend the life of the streets in usable condition by sealing cracks and patching potholes, repairing curbs and catch basins. Sweep and clean streets and right-of-ways using street sweepers and manual labor to maintain appropriate appearance.

2. Maintain the Citys drainage system through inspection, cleaning and repair of storm drains, ditches, and flood controls.

3. Mow roadsides, cut brush and trees using mowers, tractors, chain saws and weed eaters. Clean, paint and make repairs to ensure facilities are clean, neat and in serviceable condition.

4. Repair and maintain equipment in shop to keep it in working order.

5. Assist with the removal of ice and snow using trucks, loaders, and salt/sand spreaders to enable traffic to move as safely as possible.

6. Assist with the sweeping and cleaning of streets and rights-of-ways using street sweepers and manual labor to maintain appropriate appearance.

7. Conduct daily rounds to monitor all Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and Water equipment and make minor adjustments as needed to ensure equipment is working to meet standards and functioning within required limits and perform monitoring/analysis of statistical information, including sampling for State quality standards.

8. Assist with installing and maintaining water services, and preventive maintenance at plant and lift stations, including sludge hauling as well as meter reading in a timely manner with no leaks.

Use appropriate software to document preventative maintenance.

Other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor as warranted by business needs. The incumbent is expected to do all assigned responsibilities. Additionally, on a rotational basis, must be on 24 hours on call duty. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Experience and Education Requirements -

High school diploma or GED required.

1 year of experience in streets or public works related maintenance and construction field is preferred.

Experience operating and maintaining construction equipment, technical and practical knowledge of street repair and maintenance is preferred.

Valid class A commercial Kansas state drivers license with tanker endorsement and air brakes (or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment).

Must have a general knowledge of mechanics, testing equipment, wastewater collections maintenance and operation, wastewater treatment, minor electrical work, and computers.

. Ability to demonstrate flexibility in work environments, performing a variety of changing tasks.

Ability to work well with citizens and the general public.

Strong verbal, written, communication and speaking skills.

Must have basic computer skills and comprehend Microsoft Office products and SCADA systems.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to perform the following: transport oneself and needed materials to various job site locations within and around the City of Valley Center; lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally, 25 pounds frequently, and 80 pounds with assistance.

Representative tasks include unloading and transporting bagged chemicals and carrying replacement parts and repair tools; crawl, push pull balance, climb using ladders and stairs, to make routine rounds, unload and transport chemicals, and maintain equipment located at some height above the ground; stoop, bend, reach, handle, finger, and feel while maintaining equipment; talk, hear, taste, and feel while communicating and diagnosing equipment malfunction; see at near, mid, and far ranges and to perceive depth and distinguish colors.

Representative tasks include driving and making rounds to detect incorrect water distribution operation; read information from and enter information into computers; read and interpret information from charts, maps, diagrams, gauges, meters, and computers; work shifts and overtime and be available for on-call duty as needed; think and act with good judgment during emergency situations, such as unplanned events, power outages, and sudden mechanical failures.
