Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Road and Landfill Supervisor, the Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work on equipment and vehicles assigned to the Butler County Road and Bridge, Landfill and Noxious Weed Departments. The employee in this position is responsible for diagnosing and performing the required maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
Examples of Work (Essential Functions):
- Changes oil, filters, belts, hoses, tires;
- Checks and services related equipment on a regularbasis;
- Cleans the shop area and storestools;
- Designs, welds, fabricates solutions, and equipment add-ons to make work more efficient for operators;
- Diagnoses and problem solves equipment and electrical, mechanical, hydraulic malfunctions at a very high technicallevel;
- Performs routine to complex maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on all types of vehicles and equipment to include vehicles, heavy construction equipment, loaders, dump trucks, small engines and small equipment;
- Performs preventive maintenance of light to heavy equipment; including changing oil and filters, lubricating and checking fluids, belts, hoses, tires, and brakesystems;
- Performs work according to service manuals, schematics and hydraulic flow charts; disassembles defective equipment and replaces defectiveparts;
- Enforces and follows safetyrules;
- Maintains accurate equipment maintenancerecords;
- Overhaulslargedieselenginesandgasolineenginesifproperequipmentisonhand,otherwisework with outside vendors to makerepairs;
- Repairs engines, transmissions, drive lines and brakes onvehicles;
- Maintains inventory and obtains quotes for equipment supplies, parts,fuel;
- Evaluates the most effective route to repair equipment and makes recommendations tosupervisor;
- Enforces warranties with vendors;
- Usessoftwareandcomputerprogramstodiagnoseproblems,identifysolutions,findsuppliers, maintain inventories, schedule preventativemaintenance;
- Prepares bids and specifications for vehicle and equipmentreplacement;
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary or as required.

- Ability to have vision to locate parts and repair equipment in the most cost efficient manner possible.
- Ability to prioritize work schedule in repairs needed for maximumefficiency;
- Ability to operate all shopequipment;
- Ability to reliably and predictably carry outduties;
- Ability to prioritize what the order ofrepairs;
- Ability to weld and use weldingtools;
- Ability to work on or install air conditionsystems;
- Ability to convey and receive detailed or important instructions and information to and from other workers and the generalpublic;
- Ability to keep and maintain accurate and detailed equipment cost and repairrecords;
- Knowledge of advanced or new systemtraining;
- Knowledge of construction equipmentoperation;
- Knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance andrepair;
- Skill in shop management and a positive can do attitude.
Problem Solving: Problem solving exists in this position. Must accurately troubleshoot problems. Problems include keeping equipment operating properly and determining malfunctions in machinery.
Decision Making: Decision making exists in this position. Decisions include determining the most appropriate method of repair or replacement.
Accountability: Employee does not have budgetary control of the department and does not participate in the annual department budget process.
Supervision: Supervision is provided and job related decisions are reviewed by the supervisor. Employee does not have supervisory responsibility over subordinate personnel.
P rsonal Relationships: Occasional contact with other county departments and the general public.
