JOB TITLE: Journeyman Instrument and Control Technician REQUISITION: FOS00AX DEPARTMENT: Coal Fired Power Plants
LOCATION: Lawrence Energy Center PAY: $50.03

Scheduled Work Hours: Typically Monday-Thursday 0600-1630, but may include rotating shifts, evening, weekend and other coverage as required by operational business needs.

I&C Technician- "shall be responsible for and have the knowledge, skill, and ability to operate and maintain all plant equipment. They shall be competent in and have work jurisdiction over all skill areas of the energy center including instrumentation and control systems. Journeyman I & C Technicians will be responsible to and report to the Operations/Maintenance Supervisors/Foreman."

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Instrument & Control Technicians are responsible for: 1) ensuring instrumentation, control systems and automation systems are calibrated and functioning properly, 2) providing input to optimize the systems and ensure appropriate regulatory requirements and records are maintained, 3) assessing, maintaining, repairing, and monitoring control systems and systems associated with compressors, pumps, generation control, and 4) maintaining the performance of temperature, pressure, flow and level measurement control equipment, as well as valves, hydraulic control panels and single loop controllers. Specific duties include:

• Troubleshooting — Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it. • Complex Problem Solving — Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions • Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates — Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person. • Monitor Processes, Materials, or Surroundings — Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems • Documenting/Recording Information — Entering, transcribing, recording, storing, or maintaining information in written or electronic/magnetic form. • Drafting, Laying Out, and Specifying Technical Devices, Parts, and Equipment — Providing documentation, detailed instructions, drawings, or specifications to tell others about how devices, parts, equipment, or structures are to be fabricated, constructed, assembled, modified, maintained, or used • Drafting, Laying Out, and Specifying System or Equipment Control Logic — Providing documentation, detailed instructions, drawings, or specifications detailing how control logic schemes are to be developed, tested, implemented, modified, maintained, or used.

Education and Experience Requirements: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of electronic or industrial controls in a power plant. The preferred candidate will have a two year Electronic / Electrical vocational / technical certificate or a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and four years of related experience.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft software and familiarity with industrial computer systems, motor control, PLCs and DCSs. • Demonstrated proficiency with control system components and their use in a system and with converting different types of control signals. • Demonstrated knowledge of the sequence of operation to control a valve operator and proficiency in programming a single loop controller. • Demonstrated knowledge of analog/digital output and input terminations for a controller. • Demonstrated basic mechanical aptitude and knowledgeable with trades mathematics, trades communications, electronics, pneumatic, electronic and electric controls. • Maintain and administer DCS and local control system computer networks and related computing environments including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations. • Install new hardware or software systems or components, ensuring integration with existing network systems. • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware, software, or other network and system problems, and replace defective components when necessary. • Consult manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and engineering personnel to troubleshoot and solve equipment problems and to determine optimum equipment functioning. • Prepare and maintain records detailing tests, repairs, and maintenance. • Analyze test data to diagnose malfunctions, to determine performance characteristics of systems, or to evaluate effects of system modifications. • Ability to easily handle multiple priorities; visualize, analyze and make decisions with limited data; process information in an orderly, accurate and timely manner; and operate within short time frames.
• Must be able to apply tact, diplomacy, reason and logic; recognize consequences of erroneous actions; respond quickly; focus on tasks and other required functions.
• Ability to perform the physical activities of the job (includes but is not limited to climbing, color vision, depth perception, hearing, seeing, sitting, standing, talking, walking, outside work, etc.).

Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: • Demonstrated knowledge of ISA Standards and TCP/IP and RS232 communication experience as applied to interfacing equipment. • Knowledge and demonstrated previous use of Industrial Communications Systems (Ethernet, ControlNet, Modbus, Data Highway Plus, DeviceNet) and associated Electrical Interfaces (RS-232C, RS-485, RS-422) or equivalent.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding and/or Testing Required: Must possess a valid driver's license. Requires successful completion of MASS/POSS aptitude testing.

Working Conditions: Working conditions will require indoor and outdoor work at a moment’s notice in all types of weather. The successful applicant is subject to call outs and will be required to live within 30 minutes driving time of the Lawrence Energy Center. Must have a satisfactory work record including good attendance.
