Paraprofessional Job Description

The Upward Bound Summer Program at NCCC is a free six-week residential college prep program that simulates

the college experience. Participating students will take classes that help with their upcoming high school curriculum and

prepare them for college. Students will also participate in fun activities with community and campus partners.

The Upward Bound Program is looking for 2 Paraprofessionals (Paras) to assist in the teaching and tutoring of

five high-school-level academic subjects: Literature, Composition, Science, Math, & Spanish. These five topics are

taught in 3 levels. This seasonal position begins May 28, 2024, and ends June 27, 2024. A high school diploma and at

least two years of study at an institute of higher education are required. At least three years of experience working with

high school students (grades 9 12) and an Associates Degree are preferred. Pay amount is \$1,800.

Para Expectations

1. Help the instructor monitor student progress in the classroom.

2. Work with the other Para to determine who will be responsible for which Level. Paras will follow this Level to all

five academic classes and to study hall twice a week.

3. Classes are taught Monday-Thursday, except for the first week, where there are no classes on Monday, May 27

(Memorial Day), so classes the first week are taught Tuesday through Friday. Each class will be repeated every

other day (M/W/F or Tu/Th). Classes take place between 9 am and 12 pm.

4. Students will be split into 3 Levels. The material taught in Level 3 will be slightly more advanced than in Level 2,

which is slightly more advanced than Level 1.

5. Monitor student progress throughout the course and update the UB Staff several times a week with student

grades via Google Classroom.

6. Keep up-to-date records on attendance and submit them to UB staff daily.

7. Provide individual assistance/tutoring to students during each class period and study hall.

8. Take notes on class materials and assignments. When students are absent, work with them individually to

review missed materials and homework.

9. Supervise Second Study Hall on the same days of the week you are in classes (M/W or T/TH). All students with

missing assignments, absences, or credit recovery from the regular school year must attend. Second Study Hall

will run from 2 pm to 5 pm.

10. Attend a staff orientation meeting before the summer program and any other staff meetings.

11. Work in conjunction with the academic instructors in their classrooms.

12. Submit copy requests/supply requests in advance.

13. Notify the UB office in case of sickness or absence (24 hours in advance, if possible).

14. Submit all required paperwork on time.

15. Show patience and interest in all UB students.

16. Cooperate and collaborate with all other UB staff & NCCC staff

17. Be available to work all of your scheduled class times from May 28-June 27, 2024. (A substitute may be allowed

with prior notice and UB staff permission.)

18. Be flexible, cooperative, and creative, and keep a sense of humor.

19. During morning Study Hall, work with students who need extra assistance. Be available to help with material

from any subject and help students in any Level (if the material is similar.)

20. Be willing to assist UB Staff with activity setup as needed.

21. Be a positive role model for UB participants.

22. Help participants to develop academic, motivational, personal, and leadership potential.

23. Encourage students to be self-confident, independent learners.

24. Other duties as assigned and hours are subject to change.

Many of our student s have IEPs, 504 Plans, or other intellectual or learning disabilities. You will need to be able to

divide your attention and assistance with multiple students at a time. Students will need to be reminded, encouraged,

and prompted to do their work. All students will need to earn a C or better in their classes, and all students with

Credit Recovery must complete it before June 29, 2024.
