POSITION DESCRIPTION
CITY OF CONCORDIA
POSITION TITLE:
Public Works Equipment Operator
POSITION REPORTS TO:
Public Works Foreman/Director of Public Works
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
This position is responsible for operating light and heavy equipment as well as maintenance and operation of departmental tasks on equipment and structures as well as ground maintenance tasks.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Essential Functions
Operates the departments equipment both light and heavy.
Operates the departments vehicles both light and heavy.
Makes operational inspections on vehicles and equipment. Such as checking fluid levels, checking tire pressure and other items pertinent to the operation of vehicles, and equipment. Ensure that all equipment is in a safe operating condition before operating.
May assist shop personnel on repairs to vehicles and equipment.
Assists in the maintenance, construction or reconstruction of streets, alleys, storm sewers and traffic control devices.
Required to perform manual labor on maintenance and construction projects.
Open and close graves.
Required to stand a rotating weekend and evening call-out.
May supervise seasonal or fulltime employees in routine tasks at the direction of the Director or Supervisor.
Other Functions
Other tasks as assigned by Director or Supervisor.
May be required to assist another department when needed.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Must be able to deal with the public in a friendly and tactful manner.
Must be able to maintain a good working relationship with other departments and employees.
Considerable knowledge of the operation, care and maintenance of tools and equipment.
Knowledge of the appropriate safety procedures and practices of vehicle and equipment operation.
Some mechanical ability.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Dependability.
Required to work overtime as necessary.
Fulltime regular attendance required.
Reside within 20-minute drive of Concordia or within Cloud County within 6 months of employment.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
Combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, ability and skill to do the required tasks as assigned.
Possess a valid Class C Kansas Drivers License and an established personal driving
history that is acceptable for coverage by the Citys insurance carrier.
Possess a valid Commercial Drivers License or the ability to obtain within one year (The City will provide training to obtain a CDL if the employee does not already have one).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Moderate levels of stress.
Lower and upper body strength to perform many daily maintenance functions.
Ability to stand for long periods of time.
Ability to sit and drive for extended periods of time up to 8 hours and occasionally longer.
Ability to perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
The environmental demands here are representative of those that must be met be an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Exposure to extreme adverse weather conditions such as, hot/dry, wet/muddy and extreme cold.
