POSITION DESCRIPTION
CITY OF CONCORDIA
POSITION TITLE:
Fire Fighter/AEMT
POSITION REPORTS TO:
Captain
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Under supervision, the Firefighter/AEMT is a nonexempt position which performs specialized work in the prevention and suppression of fires and provides live saving services to the sick and injured during EMS function.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Essential Functions
Respond to fire alarms, rescue, ambulance and other emergency calls.
Respond to EMS call for medical assistance, while acting in the capacity of and AEMT.
Must be Kansas certified as at one of the following levels: AEMT.
Make forcible entry when necessary.
Combat fire, assists in rescue operations, and implements correct medical procedures to the sick and injured.
Drive and operate fire fighting apparatus, EMS Units, vehicles, and equipment.
Operate a variety of hand tools including chain saws, hydraulic equipment, generators, fans, and ladders.
Maintain and clean fire station, vehicles and equipment
Assist in inspections, prevention, and public education activities.
Attend fire and EMS training.
Maintain a current EMS certification with the KBEMS.
Complete appropriate records and reports
Promote a professional image to co-workers and the public.
Fulltime regular attendance required.
Other Functions
Perform office duties.
Perform other tasks assigned by officers.
Perform maintenance for city hall.
Assist other city departments in emergency situations.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
The ability to use logical thinking to solve problems.
Expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six month in the position.
Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and friendly manner on telephones or in person.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Knowledge of fire control methods and techniques. Some knowledge of codes, hazardous material, rescue procedures and building construction.
Thorough knowledge of EMS methods, procedures and techniques concurrent with EMS level.
Good oral skills, written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
Determines strategies to accomplish fire suppression, rescue and EMS tasks.
Makes decision on the proper methods of general station duties.
Knowledge and operation of Computers, typewriters, adding machine, radio system.
Ability to handle death and destruction in a professional manner.
Reside within 20-minute drive of Concordia or within Cloud County within 6 months of employment.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
Kansas certified Advance Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) or higher.
Possess a valid Class B or higher Kansas Drivers License and an established personal driving history that is acceptable for coverage by the Citys insurance carrier.
