Overview

The Environmental Specialist I leads and implements environmental programs and guidelines to support Panasonic Energy Corporation North America (PECNA) battery production. This role is key in managing PENA's environmental programs and policies. The environmental specialist will collaborate with various stakeholders to maintain compliance and mitigate risk within PECNA's integrated management system.

We are seeking dedicated individuals to join us as full-time, on-site team members at our new, state-of-the-art factory located in the thriving city of DeSoto, Kansas.

The Environmental Specialist I is responsible for leading and implementing Environmental programs and guidelines in support of PECNA’s battery production. The Environmental Specialist I plays a key role in production operations as well as the management of PENA’s Environmental programs and policies. This position is primarily focused on environmental programs; however, the Environmental Specialist I will support health and safety efforts on an as needed basis. Additionally, the Specialist I will work directly with PENA leaders, stakeholders, consultants, and vendors to maintain compliance and mitigate risk by implementing best practices within PECNA’s integrated management system.

Essential Duties:

  • Promote a culture of quality, safety, environmental compliance, and continuous improvement throughout the PECNA organization.

  • Serve as a technical consultant/subject matter expert for Environmental programs and policies.

  • Independently answer questions, concerns, and compliance issues from internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental laws, regulations, and standards.

  • Develop and implement written environmental programs, policies, and procedures.

  • Assess and evaluate process and activities on the production floor and guide production teams in adoption of best environmental management practices.

  • Work collaboratively with Production and support teams to implement and support ISO 14001 implementation,

  • Coach and influence members on a wide range of EHS processes and procedures, driving a high-performance culture of safety, quality, and sustainability.

  • Lead/support change management processes.

  • Support industrial hygiene surveys and job hazard assessments to identify and control physical, chemical, and biological hazards in the workplace.

  • Lead incident analyses to determine root cause(s), prevention, and corrective measures.

  • Collect and analyze data using commercial or in-house platforms.

  • Effectively communicate information to verify compliance and continuous improvement efforts.

  • Assist with emergency response activities and drills.

  • Conduct routine audits to identify deficiencies and develop appropriate corrective actions.

  • Prepare and submit timely and accurate reports and permitting requirements as needed.

  • Interact and support personnel at all levels, both internal and external to the company.

  • Work effectively and efficiently in both team-based and independent working environments to add value to the organization.

  • Perform any other tasks that may be assigned by EHS leaders.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements:

  • To ensure the health and safety in the workplace and for the protection of our employees’, wearing PPE is a possibility and includes equipment such as a full Tyvek suit, safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, face mask, and a full hazmat suit that includes a respirator.

Qualifications: Requirements - Required and/or Preferred

Education:

  • Basic/Required:  High School Diploma or GED

  • Preferred: Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, or related science or technical field from an accredited college or university

Essential Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1-3 years of environmental compliance experience, with college degree. 4+ years environmental experience in lieu of college education.

  • 1 year of experience working in manufacturing environment.

  • Basic understanding of Environmental regulations. Basic knowledge of the Clean Air Act, Toxic Substance Control Act, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures regulations, etc.

  • Experience in creating and conducting environmental training.

  • Experience conducting incident investigations, and root cause analysis.

  • Experience working with contractors and external personnel regarding environmental compliance.

  • Self-starter, with general instructions. Strong attention to detail.

  • Work effectively and efficiently in a cross-discipline environment as well as independently.

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work in an extremely fast-paced and changing environment.

  • Strong analytical, quantitative, technical writing, mathematics, and problem-solving skills.

  • Results orientated with the ability to plan and deliver against production deadlines and goals.

  • Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English.

  • Skills in MS Office (Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook).
