Purpose: Helps the lead mechanic maintain school district cars, buses and vans in top condition in order to prevent problems and interruptions of district educational programs and to ensure the safety of all students and district staff during transportation. To perform these duties the mechanic must work closely with the staff and administration of Derby Public Schools.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Assist lead automotive mechanic in maintaining district cars and buses in top condition in order to prevent problems and interruptions of district educational programs.
  • Ensure the safety of all students and district personnel during transportation.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
  • React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Appropriately operate all equipment and machinery as required.
  • Comply with all district policies, rules and regulations.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

  • Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
  • Requires stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning and reaching.
  • Requires climbing and balancing.
  • Requires driving skills.
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors year-round.
  • Must be able to work in noisy, crowded and stressful environments.
  • Must be able to work in and around dust, fumes and odors.
  • Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.

General Responsibilities:

  • Assist lead automotive mechanic in diagnosing the repairing problems on all school district vehicles.
  • Maintain a schedule and perform all oil, lube and filter changes as required on all school district vehicles.
  • Wash bus fleet on a regular basis.
  • Coordinate the seasonal bus washer/helpers responsible for cleaning the inside of vehicles, waxing floors and cleaning windows.
  • Oversee high school special education students as they help with tasks for the transportation department.
  • Pick up and deliver automobile parts for lead mechanic as requested.
  • Accurately log mileage on activity vehicles and buses; submit logs monthly to transportation dispatcher so timely oil changes and other preventative maintenance may be scheduled.
  • Check all activity vehicle schedules to ensure they are available and ready.
  • Prepare vehicles for activity trips:
    • a. Check fuel and fluid levels.
    • b. Check tires.
    • c. Clean vehicle inside and out so that it proudly represents Derby.
    • d. Prepare activity vehicle with proper equipment to ensure a successful trip.
    • e. Keep an accurate record of items placed in each vehicle before it leaves on a trip.
    • f. Indicate on the record who is taking the vehicle.
    • g. Ensure that buses and activity vehicles are inspected prior to each route or activity trip; report any problems to lead mechanic.10.
  • Maintain a list of all annual filter changes such as diesel and fuel filters, transmission filters and water separators on all school district vehicles.
  • Repair and change tires as required.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical problems on school district vehicles.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies for transportation department.
  • Prepare buses for yearly inspection by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
  • Assist lead automotive mechanic on any and all other problems with school district vehicles.
  • Serve as substitute school bus driver for school district as needed.
  • Maintain high standards of safety and good housekeeping in work area.
  • Communicate with transport tion, maintenance and food service department workers regarding vehicle problems.
  • Coordinate with the transportation supervisor on vehicle accessibility.
  • Keep abreast of all new innovative ideas and techniques.
  • Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the transportation supervisor that are consistent with the requirements and qualifications for the position.
