Position Summary:Under the supervision of the Road or Landfill Supervisor, the Light Equipment Operator II hauls material to the job site for repair and construction of roads within Butler County. In addition to safely and efficiently operating vehicles, the Light Equipment Operator II performs routine manual work in the operation of light and heavy equipment for loading and transporting materials. A limited amount of bridge maintenance work is required.

Examples of Work (Essential Functions):

  • Performs bridge maintenance work such as mowing road ditches, installing and maintaining culverts and filling washouts and installing guardrail, cutting brush, tree trimming and removing debris;
  • Performs minor vehicle maintenance; cleans or lubricates vehicles, machinery, equipment, instrument, tools, work areas, and other objects, using hand tools, power tools, and cleaning equipment;
  • Follows safety rules;
  • Loads materials and performs work related manual tasks as required;
  • Operates equipment such as a tandem truck or loader in the transportation of materials;
  • Operates tractors, mowers and other related vehicles;
  • Performs snow and ice removal operations
  • Performs unskilled manual work as assigned;
  • Rebuilds roads and bridges;
  • Repairs and replaces wood, concrete and steel decks;
  • Replaces structural steel, back walls, guardrails and nail ties;
  • Spreads dirt, cover, gravel, sand, rock and asphalt, haul material and supplies to job sites;
  • Uses tools ranging from common hand and power tools, such as hammers, hoists, saws, chainsaws, drills, weed eaters, wrenches, shovels and rakes;
  • Cleans or lubricates vehicles, machinery, equipment, instruments, tools, work areas, and other objects, using hand tools, power tools, and cleaning equipment;
  • Performs light maintenance and servicing of work in connection with the operations of related equipment, performs daily inspection of equipment;
  • Set out signs and cones around work areas to divert traffic, flag motorists to warn them of obstacles or repair work ahead, performs work according to work zone safety guidelines;
  • Operates equipment while paying close attention to public traffic, conditions, drivers;
  • Sorts and segregates waste such as wood, brush, construction debris, rock, white goods, household hazardous waste;
  • Installs and repairs traffic signs, signals, barricades, close roads when appropriate;
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Examples of Work (Marginal Functions):

  • Sets forms, rebar and pours concrete;
  • Lays seed and sod, mulch, performs landscaping, planting of trees, mowing;
  • Performs welding, fabricating;
  • Removes trash along roadside or at landfill;
  • Works in scale house assisting haulers and the public;
  • Performs flare readings when needed;
  • Performs concrete work on small projects.

Decision Making:Limited decision making exists in this position.

Accountability:Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the department and does not participate in the annual department budget process.

Supervision:Supervision is provided and job related decisions are reviewed by the Road Supervisor or Solid Waste Supervisor. Employee does not have supervisory responsibility over subordinate personnel.

Personal Relationships:Occasional contact with other county departments and frequent contact with the general public.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed more than two thirds of the time to conditions such moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals and outside weather conditions. The employee may also be exposed to high, precarious places, and vibration. The employee may also be exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. This position may be called out 24 hours a day or rotate being on call, including weekends and holidays.
