This position will promote adoption of University of Kansas (KU) technologies. Licensing Associates solicit, evaluate, and manage invention disclosures; market technologies and identify potential company licensees; work with the IP Management group to help secure intellectual property protection for technologies; draft and negotiate license agreements; and establish and maintain a network of working relationships with KU research faculty, departments, local and state economic development partners, and potential and existing company licensees.The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, creative individual with a technical background. Individuals with experience in technology transfer and demonstrated ability to work independently are preferred.The successful candidate will have:Strong communication, analytical, and interpersonal skillsTechnical skills - life science/engineering expertise (as applicable) and ability to handle a large portfolio of technologies and complex subject matterCommitment to confidentialityStrong team player with a positive, customer-service attitudeDemonstrates initiative, diligence/preparedness, and independent judgmentSpecific responsibilities (essential functions) include: Assess Technologies and Evaluate Markets:Know and understand the criteria and requirements for marketing, managing and commercializing inventions and technologiesConduct research and analysis to identify commercial applications and determine commercial potential within the various market applicationsIdentify potential partners and/or licensees and ways to position technologies in a competitive environment for their greatest commercial successSupport Marketing and Management Strategies for Technologies:Prepare descriptions and marketing materials to fulfill marketing strategiesDraft terms and conditions documents for research collaboration and licensing technologiesPost technology descriptions and other marketing or promotional materials on the website and other media outlets for maximum marketing exposure.Identify and engage companies and individuals in commercialization discussions.Evaluate Technologies for Patent Protection:Know and understand complex issues surrounding the US patenting and copyright processes, rules and guidelines; hold and exercise sound working knowledge of the various elements of a patent.Evaluate intellectual property potential; conduct preliminary patent searches and patentability analyses.License Technologies to Startups and Existing Companies:Develop and conduct marketing campaigns to promote technologies to potential licensees.Develop licensing strategies for technologies, including proposed valuations and licensing terms for each of several market applications as appropriate.Effectively negotiate licensing terms with companies, both startups and existing companies.Know and understand KUIC processes and be able to work with multifunctional teams to identify, develop, and promote technologies with commercial potential.Maintain Operations:Know and use commercialization database management system.Develop and manage program to employ graduate research assistants and interns for the purpose of evaluating technologies from the perspective of technical feasibility, competitive advantage, market opportunity, and legal protection.Coordinate and work with KUCTC staff to plan, structure and drive licensing support work.Understand, use and comply with the requirements for the US Government's iEdison invention disclosure reporting system.Other Duties:This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties o r responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
