Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-04 General/Specialized Experience: (1) Six months of general experience which includes administrative, technical, clerical, military, or other work that involved following written procedures, rules, or regulations in contacts with co-workers, supervisors, or members of the public to provide a service, respond to inquiries, or obtain information; AND (2) Six months of specialized experience which includes work that provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques and involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; OR maintaining order and protecting life. (NOTE: Successful completion of training in an accredited technical school that covered subjects such as physical security procedures, local laws, or investigative techniques is considered qualifying for specialized experience on a month-for-month basis.) This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03). GS-05 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Work that provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques and involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; AND (2) Maintaining order and protecting life. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). GS-06 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Using protective systems and techniques; (2) Protecting property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; (2) Maintaining order and protecting life; AND (3) Communicating orders and urgent information. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). NOTE: Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis, but this experience MUST be demonstrated in your resume. NOTE: Pre-employment inquiries to include, at a minimum, checks with former employers and supervisors are required BEFORE a tentative job offer may be made to an applicant based on AR 190-56, The Army Civilian Police and Security Guard Program.
