Description

The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Part-Time Education Aide with the Lee Richardson Zoo. This position maintains scheduling calendar for the education division and ambassador animal use records. Assists with education programs, birthday parties and events when needed. Maintains, organizes, inventories and repairs biofacts; obtains new biofacts and develops new organizational systems as necessary. Researches new and existing animals; creates and updates animal information and handling sheets. Inventories and updates education resources. Other duties as needed. The position is part-time with a flexible schedule and generally reports to work Monday-Friday with occasional weekend work.

Examples of Duties

  • Completes all calendar entries and scheduling for the education division. This includes, but is not limited to, off-site and on-site education programs, birthday parties, and coordination of scheduling needs with the volunteer coordinator.

  • Enters animal use records for ambassador animals. This will include, but is not limited to, socialization records, program use, training schedules, and other animal use entries as needed.

  • Maintains, organizes, inventories and repairs biofacts for use in educational programs and as teacher resources to be checked out. Periodically reviews discovery boxes and suggests additions or changes to best meet the needs of staff, volunteers and teachers.

  • Researches new and existing animals for the purpose of writing and updating information sheets, handling guides, pocket manuals and other resources.

  • Inventories all education resources as needed, including program materials and supplies.

  • Participate in staff training sessions for emergency preparedness, first responders, and basic firearms safety.

  • Assist with or coordinate division needs for set-up and tear down for events and educational programming, including physical set-up of tables, chairs, displays, tents, etc.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Skill in typing, filing, data entry, word processing, etc. Ability to coordinate a variety of work activities with excellent attention to details, to meet deadlines, and follow multiple instructions. Ability to communicate clearly with City staff and officials, community organizations, and the general public. Ability to use computers and computer technology, various software - specifically Microsoft Office, scanning equipment, etc.); ability to understand and communicate clearly, in English, written and verbal instructions, and to communicate well through written and verbal means with individuals of all ages and abilities. Bilingual preferred.

Education, Certification and Experience: High School diploma or GED with some experience performing similar work required or an Associate of Arts Degree in secretarial, business or a related field. Valid Kansas driver’s license required.

Supplemental Information

Environment: Majority of work is performed indoors (75%) and the rest outdoors. Indoor work is performed in a controlled environment. Outdoor work is performed in all types of weather, i.e. extreme, moderate and temperate heat and cold temperatures, snow, fog, ice, rain, sleet, high and gusting winds, humid and dry conditions.

Surfaces: Carpet, tile, brick and concrete floors inside. Grass, asphalt, cement, brick, wood, dirt and sand outdoors. Subjected to allergens, fur, dust, plants, paints, etc.

Physical Characteristics: Ability to lift up to 60 lbs.; walk, sit, stand, kneel, crawl, bend, climb ladder, push, reach, hear, see, write, drive and type and speak aloud to public audiences.
