Description
The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Solid Waste Foreman with the Solid Waste Department. This position is responsible for assisting in the operation, supervision, and maintenance of department work activities, including but not limited to the waste reduction and recycling center. Maintains materials and supplies for work projects.
Examples of Duties
Supervises and manages daily activities in the absence of Supervisor.
Maintains inventories, records, and reports for division operations.
Assists in planning, scheduling, and supervising work activities of assigned personnel.
Instructs employees in the proper work procedures and equipment operation.
Assists drivers with work activities.
Inspects routes and enforces landfill operations.
Follows Federal and State safety rules and procedures at all times.
Responds to public requests for information.
Subject to the Departments Random Drug/Alcohol testing program.
Capable of using electric, gas, or air powered tools weighing 5 to 150 lbs.
Follows and enforces safety policies and practices as established by director.
Handle containers weighing 100 to 350 lbs.
Required - Kansas CDL Driver’s License.
Handle baled recyclables weighing up to 2000 lbs.
Backup driver for refuse and recycling operations.
Operates any and all equipment pertaining to collection and/or recycling.
Applies chemicals related to the department, using proper safety procedures.
Performs any other duties as assigned as long as it is non-certified.
Included in the on-call Rotation
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of scheduling methods and equipment for refuse collection and disposal. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures. Skill in the use of hand tools and equipment used in general maintenance and repair. Ability to communicate verbally or in writing with City employees, officials, and the general public. Welding metal fabrication is preferred.
Education, Certification and Experience: High school diploma or GED. One (1) year of experience in solid waste operation required with some supervisory experience. Valid Kansas driver's license (Class B CDL) is required within the first 6 months of employment.
Supplemental Information
Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather. Majority of work is performed outdoors, i.e. moderate to extreme cold and heat, snow, rain, hail, sleet, high and gusting winds, dust, and dry conditions.
Surfaces: Includes, but not limited to dirt, sand, gravel, concrete, asphalt, grass and wood.
Physical Characteristics: Includes, but not limited to, bend, kneel, push, pull, reach, hold, stand, walk, jump, sit, drive, and ability to lift up to 100 pounds. and carry objects weighing 75-100 pounds.
