Job Brief

Sunflower Substation Technicians are an integral part of keeping the lights on for Kansans! Join our substation department where you will use your craftsmanship for maintenance and construction of high voltage electrical substations.

As a Substation Technician for Sunflower Electric Power Corporation in Great Bend, KS, you will get the opportunity to work on transformers and other mechanical and electrical components of transmission substations. Enjoy traveling our service territory as you assist with the construction, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of electric transmission and distribution substation equipment including power transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and various electrical and electronic systems with most duties involving working with circuits between 48 and 600 volts.

    Apprentice Qualifications:

  • Two year post high school technical certification in industrial electrical, instrument and control, or electronics; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • One year control circuit wiring and installation experience preferred.

  • Placement in the position will be based upon the level of competencies possessed.

    Journey Qualifications:

  • Two year post high school technical certification in industrial electrical, instrument and control, or electronics and four years electric utility substation experience with increasingly responsible duties related to the installation and maintenance of substation equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Completion of a recognized substation apprenticeship program is preferred.

    EEI Testing:We administer selection tests for a variety of positions. The required tests have been developed by the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), a trade association of investor-owned electric utility companies. We strongly encourage candidates to review all the information, including the sample test brochures, and to use the available practice tests before taking the actual tests, available here:
