FIREFIGHTER / EMT
GENERAL PURPOSE
Serves as a member of a municipal fire department, protecting life and property through fire suppression,
hazardous materials operations, technical rescue, and delivery of fire prevention programs. Provides
emergency medical care and patient transport at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level.
Maintains Fire / EMS equipment, apparatuses, and facilities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the direct supervision of the assigned Fire / EMS officer(s), usually the deputy shift
commander or the shift commander. May also be subject to supervision by other Fire / EMS officers and
senior personnel, including the Fire Chief, EMS Officer, and designated personnel. Works within the scope
of the Incident Command System on emergency incidents.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This is generally a non-supervisory position. This position may be required to coordinate, instruct, or
supervise the work of new employees, as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs the following activities: structural firefighting (both interior and exterior), climbing ladders,
safely driving Fire / EMS apparatus, running pumps, operating equipment, laying hose, using hand tools,
extinguishing fires of various types, vehicle extrication, property salvage, fire overhaul, wildland
firefighting, and rescue activities.
Performs advanced life support patient care and transport, including emergent services and long-distance
interfacility transfers, providing services within the EMT scope of practice.
Keeps accurate records and writes/types fire and EMS reports in a timely manner.
Participates in training and classes in firefighting, emergency medical services, technical rescue,
hazardous materials, as other areas as directed. This position does require infrequent travel for out-of-
town training classes.
Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs.
Maintains fire and EMS equipment, apparatus and facilities. Performs minor repairs to departmental
equipment.
Performs general cleaning, janitorial, disinfecting, and maintenance work in the upkeep of department
facilities, vehicles, and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; mows grass and cares for
grounds around the station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes,
maintains, re-stocks, and tests EMS and fire apparatus and equipment; washes personal protective
equipment; cleans and sanitized facilities including bathroom, kitchen, administrative, and operational
parts of station.
Receives and relays fire and EMS calls and alarms. Operates radio and other communication
equipment.
Presents public education programs to the community on topics including, but not limited to, fire safety,
first aid, and fire prevention.
Provides excellent customer service to members of the public, including compassionate and responsible
patient care in the EMS setting.
All other duties as assigned.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES
Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, communications,
training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency care activities.
Assists in training new employees as assigned.
Attending meetings and conferences as assigned.
Performs support functions as directed by the command staff.
