DEPARTMENT: Public WorksREPORTS TO:Shop Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Shop Supervisor, the Mechanic is a non-exempt position under FLSA. Among other duties this position repairs and maintains equipment and performs routine manual work in the maintenance of county roads by operating light and heavy equipment. The Mechanic assists in snow removal and mowing when needed. This position also provides responsive, courteous, and efficient service.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (required):

1. Regular and dependable attendance.

2. Performs welding of equipment and repair of equipment.

3. Identifies and performs repairs and maintenance on all vehicles and equipment, including small pieces of equipment and tools.

4. Performs routine maintenance such as oil changes, fluid, and hose replacements.

5. Oversees maintenance of equipment at off-site shops.

6. Works on diagnosing problems and resolves them in the most economical manner.

7. Changes and/or repairs tires.

8. Operates and performs spray painting.

9. Cleans shop area and tools, and stores tools in appropriate location.

10. Washes and cleans vehicles and equipment.

11. Inspects equipment for problems other than those reported by individual operators.

12. Operate electronic diagnostic equipment.

13. Operates equipment such as a tandem truck, semi-tractor trailer, or front-end loader in the transportation of materials and heavy equipment when needed.

14. Assists in snow and ice removal operations when needed.

15. Must have and maintain a valid Class A CDL, a clean driving record, and the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle in the state of Kansas.

Must have and maintain a clean driving record for this position. A clean record is defined as: No misdemeanor or felony convictions for traffic/vehicular offenses (such as but not limited to DUI, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, hit and run, etc.) that are less than five (5) years old; no more than two (2) at fault or chargeable accidents that are less than five (5) years old; no more than two (2) traffic infractions (such as but not limited to speeding, failure to yield right of way, etc.) that are less than one year old.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and high, precarious places. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
