Job Description Summary:

The Director oversees the operations of the Transgenic and Gene Targeting Institutional Facility (TGIF). The TGIF provides expertise and services to the KUMC research community and beyond in areas of genomics and gene editing as applied to design and creation of animal and cell models. The Director will lead efforts for technical innovation and development of new technologies, coordinate activities with other institutional cores, and manage staff to achieve optimal outcomes. The Director will oversee existing dedicated staff who currently participate in transgenic mouse creation, genetic manipulation of cell lines and human/mouse cell lines, and mouse strain cryopreservation and rederivation. The Director will maintain a core business model structure, apply best practices, and develop and/or implement standard operating procedures. The position requires a solid commitment to strong partnerships with the University of Kansas School of Medicine and related basic, translational, and clinical research programs. The Director will implement approaches that are closely aligned to organizational efforts and strategic plans, as evidenced by focused efforts on customer relations, quality initiatives, financial performance, and operational efficiencies.

As a tenured or tenure-track faculty member in the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, the successful candidate will be an active member of the department and will contribute to the educational and service missions of the department and school and will maintain an active externally funded research program in an area relevant to their role as the director of the TGIF.

Job Description:

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

Director

  • Provide oversight and guidance in the design of molecular reagents for genetic engineering of mouse embryos, and human and mouse cells
  • Develop, implement, and oversee strategies for developing novel genetically modified mouse strains
  • Develop, implement, and oversee strategies for creation of induced pluripotent stem cell lines
  • Execute operational strategies to achieve key results aligned with stakeholder objectives
  • Maintain sound business models for ensuring provision of equitable and cost-effective services to users, and pursue efficiencies toward reducing reliance on institutional resources
  • Maintain a strong national presence in their field as evidenced by participation in societies, peer review groups, conferences, etc.
  • Develop and maintain strong strategic partnerships with School, University, and with research-intensive units including departments, cores, centers, and institutes
  • Establish and maintain key performance indicators to measure and improve service levels, quality, and operational efficiency
  • Develop strategies for growing the base of users from within the KUMC community and from key strategic partners
  • Identify resources and incorporate new technologies. Maintain a collaborative relationship with vendors and other providers of technology
  • Monitor and evaluate operational performance indicators of staff, taking corrective actions when necessary
  • Provide strong leadership, fostering a high-performance culture that encourages teamwork, collaboration, and continuous improve ent
  • Provide mentoring and career development strategies for staff
  • Create an environment in which people feel valued, respected, and energized to innovate and take calculated risks in the interest of advancing operations

Associate or Full Professor

Position will be filled at the associate or full professor level, and will be tenure eligible or tenured at the time of hire

Will be an active faculty member of the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, including service on committees and attendance at key or required Department activities
