Serco Environmental Laboratory Chemist in Kansas City, Kansas

Position Description

Serco is currently seeking an Environmental Laboratory Chemist. This is an exciting opportunity that involves laboratory testing and support for environmental sample matrices; air, water, and soil. The Chemist I will assist with the performance of established chemical analyses, instrument calibrations and maintenance, and data interpretation and validation.

Serco supports the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) where every day is Earth Day. Our skilled scientists collaborate with EPA staff at their state-of-the-art Science and Technology Center in Kansas City, KS. Here you’ll be part of the Environmental Service Assistance Team helping the EPA achieve their mission to protect human health and the environment.

In this role, you will:

  • Conduct metals digestion and analysis utilizing EPA methods

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate instruments

  • Prepare reagents and samples to be used in performing assays.

  • Demonstrate proper cleaning techniques for work area, instrumentation, and equipment.

  • Interpret and evaluate data and upload results to Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)for a final report

  • Perform review on the organic and inorganic analytical data to ensure completeness and integrity of results.

  • Perform sample disposal and Laboratory clean ups for GLP practice.

  • Perform peer review for inorganic data validation

  • Perform SOP review, internal audit, and corrective action when needed

  • Monitor work flow for incoming samples and manage backlog and due dates

  • Work independently on administrative and technical projects assigned by laboratory supervisors.

  • Support general laboratory operations and functions, including monitoring and requesting supplies and materials to maintain lab supply inventory.

  • Track inventory of supplies and reagents to ensure no interruption of work flow.

  • Trend and monitor key performance metrics.

  • Operate other instrumentation as trained.

  • Assist with Data Validation.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • BS or BA degree in a Chemistry or a related scientific discipline

  • A minimum of 0-2 year experience in analytical chemistry or a related field.

  • Must have a valid driver's license with a safe driving record

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Able to obtain a Public Trust Certificate from EPA’s Personal Security Branch

  • Demonstrate excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent computer skills and proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

  • Ability to work effectively with multiple disciplines

  • A solid background in analysis and interpretation of data.

  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and perform basic mathematical calculations.

  • Good written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, documentation skills, and attention to detail are essential.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and work in all weather conditions

  • Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends if required

  • Must be able to work standing for long periods

  • Must be able to work inside a chemical laboratory and handle chemicals

  • Must be able to wear all PPE (personal protective equipment)

Additional desired experience and skills:

  • 2 years of experience as an inorganic chemist, or laboratory technician.

  • Successful applicant will need to have good attention to detail and be able to document all sampling meticulously (training will be provided as to requirements).

  • Excellent cross-functional team leadership and participation skills

  • Knowledge of chemical families and compatibilities.

  • Environmental training (e.g. 40 or 2 Hour HAZWOPER certification), familiarity with air monitoring and environmental sample collection devices, maintenance, data recording, and processing skills are desirable

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a member of a team

  • Strong multi-tasking skills: Must be able to perform operations simultaneously and must be able to switch from task to task upon demand

  • Ability to successfully communicate with peers, managers and clients.
