Unit 15 Medical Telemetry/Adult Cystic Fibrosis

This medical-surgical inpatient unit sees a variety of diagnoses, but we specialize in the care of adult patients with Cystic Fibrosis. The majority of our patients are in need of antibiotic therapy, respiratory management, pain management, and the organization of home health services after discharge.

Unit 41 Blood & Marrow Transplant Unit (BMT)

This 20-bed protective environment unit cares for patients in our nationally accredited blood and marrow transplant program. Patients on this unit experience longer stays during their preparative chemotherapy regimens, transplant processes and post-transplant care. These patients often experience prolonged neutropenia and require complex nursing care to ensure optimal outcomes. Nurses are responsible for primary care of stem cell transplant patients, including administration of preparative chemotherapy regimens, infusion of stem cell transplants and administration of supportive intravenous and blood product therapies during the engraftment period.

Unit 42 Hematology/BMT

This 29-bed unit specializes in the treatment of malignant hematology patients. Newly diagnosed oncology patients receive the latest treatment options available. Patients receive multi-agent chemotherapy, blood products, antifungals, antibiotics and antivirals. Three of the rooms on this unit are dedicated to palliative care.

Unit 45 Medical Telemetry

This fast paced 26 bed medical telemetry unit provides advanced and specialized care to patients with a variety of medical conditions including renal failure, liver failure, respiratory complications, infections and many other diagnoses that may require continuous cardiac monitoring. Our nurses have the opportunity to work with a variety of physician services in the hospital, and through this, develop the expertise to care for our diverse population.

Unit 46 Medical Progressive Care

This medical telemetry unit t is focused on the care of the observation patient population and inpatient population. These observation class patients have a wide array of diagnosis, requiring care for a shorter period of time from 8 hours and up to 48 hours. The inpatient population consists of those patients of wide array of diagnosis as well, some that may require additional heart monitoring and medication drips such as cardiac, insulin and heparin. The team is highly engaged with leading edge therapies used to treat various conditions in a fast paced environment.

Unit 51 – General Surgery, Trauma & Plastics

This is a 27-bed unit that provides high quality care to complex medical-surgical patients. Trauma patients receive care for injuries sustained in motor vehicle crashes and falls, as well as injuries related to personal violence. General surgery patients encompass a wide variety of laparoscopic and open abdomen and bowel procedures. Team work is prevalent in this fast-paced nursing unit, and necessary to complete the complex patient care required by the trauma patient population.

Unit 53 - Inpatient Internal Medicine

This 28 bed unit provides advanced and specialized care to patients with a variety of medical conditions including renal failure, liver failure, respiratory complications, infections and many other diagnoses. It is identified as a dedicated unit for the patient population it serves, allowing for close collaboration with the physicians and other ancillary team members.

Unit 62 Medical Progressive Care

This 22 bed unit provides advanced and specialized care to patients with a variety of medical conditions on continuous cardiac monitoring. Specialized rooms on the unit allow the team to care for pediatric patients, radiation therapy as well as trial study patients. This unit is the model unit for advancing best practices in patient care and supporting spread of the established processes to other inpatient units. The participants on this team have the opportunity to be Involved in the development of these best practices and provide real time input. The unit uses the latest technology and procedures to provide innovative and compassionate care.

Unit 64-Inpatient Solid Organ Transplant and Renal Progressive Care

Nurses on this 24 bed unit provide compassionate, comprehensive care to critically ill patients throughout all phases of the organ transplant continuum. As a member of the transplant care team, nurses provide specialized care to patients who are awaiting a lifesaving organ transplant as well as those recovering from organ transplant surgery. The Center for Transplant at The University of Kansas Hospital is the largest and most successful transplant program in the region. Nurses on Unit 64 have the opportunity to work as a vital member of a nationally recognized program specializing in the care of liver, kidney and pancreas transplant patients.

Unit 66 - Medical Progressive Care/Pulmonary Hypertension

Unit 66 is a fast paced 22 bed inpatient unit which utilizes telemetry monitoring for a wide range of patient populations while still providing specialized nursing care. This unit supports expanded monitoring capabilities in their Progressive Care beds so high risk patients can safely transition from the intensive care unit. Unit 66 also plays a lead role in supporting the regions only Primary Pulmonary Hypertension program with expert nursing care that can only be found here at KU.

Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit

Adult patients of all ages rely on Rehabilitation Medicine to help them recover from debilitating injuries and illnesses and learn to care for themselves using adaptive techniques and equipment. Our goal is to help the patient return back to home, community, and work. Our staff cares for patients with brain and spinal cord injuries, neurological diseases, multiple trauma, complex burns, organ transplants, cancer, pulmonary, cardiac, and renal conditions and patients with debility recovering from complex medical and surgical conditions.

The Rehab Unit is housed in a four-story facility on the southwest corner of 39th Street and Rainbow Boulevard. The facility's second floor offers space for the hospital's Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Facility and also offers patients and staff improved environment, services and equipment. The facility offers a wide range of patient amenities, including a large gym, large showers in each room to accommodate shower benches and shower-chairs, and a kitchen and laundry to help patients prepare for self-care at home. It also offers home-like features, such as a family lounge, sleeper couches in patient rooms, and a dining room where patients can dine as a group.

Acute Care Rotation

This unique opportunity will allow a new graduate nurse to work on and gain clinical strength on several different units during their first year of nursing allowing for a broader range of experiences. This position will rotate in our Acute Care Division and will include highly complex medical, surgical and telemetry management of a broad range of diagnoses. After gaining experiences and building relationships on a variety of units, you will better understand the different patient populations and will have the opportunity to apply for full time positions on those units as they become available. The Float Pool offers an exciting opportunity to work in a wide variety of nursing specialties and units throughout the hospital. This flexible and dynamic team deploys to various units based on real time staffing needs house wide. After gaining experience and building relationships on a variety of units, you will have the opportunity to cross-train to more specialized units if you are interested in broadening your skillset. HEART CENTER

HC4 Cardiothoracic Surgery Progressive Care Unit

Acutely ill cardiothoracic surgery patients who require continuous monitoring and specialized interventions receive expert care on this unit. The nurses provide advanced and specialized care to patients who have undergone cardiothoracic surgeries including Coronary Artery Bypass Graft; Valve repair or replacement; Aortic Aneurysm repair; thoracotomy; lobectomy; carotidendartorectomy; and esophagectomy in addition to various vascular surgeries.

HC5 Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit

Acutely ill cardiovascular patients and those who require continuous monitoring and specialized interventions receive expert care on this unit. These nurses provide advanced and specialized care to patients who typically have acute myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure.

HC 7 Family & Internal Medicine PCU

32 bed telemetry progressive care unit specializing in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine. Patient diagnoses range anywhere from sepsis, to COPD exacerbations, pancreatitis, non-healing wounds, pulmonary emboli, etc. It is a fast paced unit where time management and prioritization are needed and you can gain experience with stable trachs, PEG tubes, ostomies, catheters, and wound drains. A unique feature about this unit is the working relationship with the physicians. Several simulations have been completed including rapid response and code blue simulations and this unit is slated to do another simulation for complex behavior patients.

HC8 – Urology, Vascular, GYN Oncology

This unit offers a unique opportunity to become an expert nurse in multiple specialties while caring for urology, vascular, and gynecological oncology patients. This fast-paced, surgical Progressive Care Unit provides individualized care to patients who require surgical interventions and medical supervision to alleviate symptoms and manage disorders of the urinary, reproductive and vascular systems. This 32-bed Telemetry Unit will utilize cutting edge technology to provide compassionate, data-driven, high quality care to our patients. CAMBRIDGE TOWER

CA6 – Neurology/Epilepsy/ENT

This state-of-the-art telemetry unit is dedicated to the care of the Neuroscience patient population. Nurses will work with a team of Neurospecialists in General Neurology and Neurosurgery, Neurooncology, Movement Disorders, Stroke, and Neuro Critical Care. Our patient population includes, but is not limited hydrocephalus, acute is chemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, sub arachnoid hemorrhage, neuromuscular diseases, neuroinfectious diseases, head and neck surgical intervention, intermediate microvascular surgical intervention, epilepsy and seizure monitoring. Technology utilized in this state of the art unit will include Phillips Agilent telemetry monitoring system, seizure monitoring with advanced seizure detection equipment, some hemodynamic monitoring, specialized neurologic monitoring including pupillometry, external ventricular drainage, and lumbar drainage.

This state-of-the-art telemetry unit is dedicated to the care of the Neuroscience patient population. Nurses will work with a team of Neurospecialists in General Neurology and Neurosurgery, Neurooncology, Movement Disorders, Stroke, and Neuro Critical Care. Our patient population includes, but is not limited to craniotomy for tumors, arteriovenous malformations, and intra cranial aneurysms, craniocerebral trauma, spinal cord injury, inter vertebral disk and bony abnormalities of the spine requiring surgical intervention, movement disorders requiring surgical intervention (Parkinson's Disease, Essential Tremor, etc.), surgical intervention for chronic pain and/or spasticity management, hydrocephalus, acute is chemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, sub arachnoid hemorrhage, neuromuscular diseases, neuroinfectious diseases, epilepsy and seizure monitoring. Technology utilized in this state of the art unit will include Phillips Agilent telemetry monitoring system, seizure monitoring with advanced seizure detection equipment, some hemodynamic monitoring, specialized neurologic monitoring including pupillometry, external ventricular drainage, and lumbar drainage.

CA7 – Neurosurgery and Surgical Oncology

This state-of-the-art telemetry unit is dedicated to the care of the Neurosurgery and Surgical Oncology patient populations. Nurses will work with a team of Neurospecialists in Neurosurgery and Neuro Critical Care and nationally ranked surgeons specifically for Oncology patients. Our patient population includes, but is not limited to craniotomy for tumors, arteriovenous malformations, and intra cranial aneurysms, craniocerebral trauma, spinal cord injury, inter vertebral disk and bony abnormalities of the spine requiring surgical intervention, surgical intervention for chronic pain and/or spasticity management, hydrocephalus, hemorrhagic stroke, sub arachnoid hemorrhage, and patients requiring surgical intervention to alleviate symptoms, disorders, and cancer related to the pancreas, gastrointestinal system, thyroid and parathyroid glands, and other applicable systems/organs. Technology utilized in this state of the art unit will include Phillips Agilent telemetry monitoring system, seizure monitoring with advanced seizure detection equipment, some hemodynamic monitoring, specialized neurologic monitoring including pupillometry, external ventricular drainage, and lumbar drainage. Our team is focused on high quality metrics and safe, compassionate care to our patients. We have strong multi-disciplinary partnerships with nationally ranked physicians and care for patients as a team of highly skilled professionals.

CA11 Medical Oncology

This 32-bed unit specializes in treating oncology patients who require chemotherapy as well as symptom management. Newly diagnosed cancer patients receive the latest treatment options available. Patients receive multi-agent chemotherapy, blood products, antifungals, antibiotics and antivirals. This unit contains one palliative care room.

  • The Graduate Nurse provides professional nursing care through assessment and accurate documentation, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation for the comfort and well-being of patients.

  • Carries out a plan of care specific to unit competencies for the target patient population.

  • Coordinates care delivery and education through collaboration with patient, family and all health care team providers to ensure safe, effective and quality patient care.

  • Follows organizational policies in providing safe patient care.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required:

  • AHA BLS Certification

  • Registered Nurse in State of Kansas (or multistate)

  • BSN Degree required for these patients care areas except for Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation.

  • ADN or BSN for Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation (BSN agreement required with completion within 5 years of hire for ADN nurses)
