Job Description Summary:
The Research Assistant will provide technical support for federally and privately funded studies for Alan Yu\'s lab. Dr. Yu directs a research program that investigates renal tubule physiology and diseases. A current focus is on understanding the molecular and structural basis of paracellular epithelial transport and its regulation. This individual will be involved in management of the lab, maintenance of colonies of mice with genetic mutations, cell culture and molecular and cell biology studies.
Job Description:
Job Duties
- Conduct experiments under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI).
- Mouse breeding, genotyping, small animal experimentation and tissue collection for Dr. Yu and PKD Rodent Core studies.
- Perform basic molecular and cell biology techniques such as DNA and RNA extractions, RT-PCR, immunoblot analysis, immunofluorescence staining and tissue culture.
- Assist with overall organization and maintenance of laboratory, including ordering supplies.
- Schedule maintenance and troubleshoot lab equipment.
- Maintain a current Laboratory Notebook, documenting all calculations, work, experiments, and other pertinent research information.

Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor\'s degree in a life science or other related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience on a year for year basis.
Work Experience: One year of previous lab experience (can be gained through relevant coursework and studies).
Preferred Qualifications
Work Experience:
- Two years of experience recombinant plasmid DNA preparation, RT-PCR (real time polymerase chain reaction), immunoblotting, tissue culture, immunohistochemistry.
- Experience working with rodents.
Skills
- Demonstrate excellent organizational, oral, and written skills and ability to communicate effectively.
- Work independently and take a leading role on assigned projects, under supervision and guidance of the Principal Investigator.
- Strong skills in Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel.
- Flexible and able to adapt to changing situations.

Compensation Statement:
The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
