Job Description Summary:
The primary purpose of senior scientist appointments is to either provide a long-term research career position and/or to prepare for a transition to a faculty appointment. A senior scientist is expected to participate in collaborative research and help to develop additional, new areas of research, promote publications of findings, and help in the preparation of research grants as determined by a mutual agreement between the senior scientist and a principal investigator, and participate in relevant academic activities.
The Senior Scientist will play a crucial role in supporting the Chief, faculty, and staff in the Division of Geriatrics with a focus on performing assays and managing the K-MARC (Kansas Mechanistic Aging Resilience Core). This position requires expertise in a broad range of laboratory benchtop techniques including working with nucleic acids (both DNA and RNA), proteins (Westerns, ELISAs), cell culture, microscopy and immunohistochemistry, cell sorting, and animal handling and tissue processing.
The successful candidate will work both independently and collaboratively as part of a translational geroscience research team and have a passion for advancing translational research and a commitment to precision and innovation.
Job Description:
Job Duties Outlined
- Carry out research objectives that are outlined by the Principal Investigator.
- Develop, validate, and run assays to support translational research on clinical trials and other basic science research projects.
- Prepare standard operating procedures for novel assays developed in the lab.
- Disseminate knowledge and train other lab members on novel assays of general interest.
- Understand the basic principles of instrumentation and recognize problems with assays when they arise, taking appropriate corrective actions.
- Review all data with the lab PI and core Director/supervisor before releasing results to ensure completeness and alignment with the study\'s objectives.
- Collaborate effectively with team members, researchers, and clinicians at the University and external collaborators.
- Assist the lab PI and core Director/supervisor with the writing of manuscripts, grants, and study budgets. Present data at lab meetings and conferences.
- Participate in conference calls with collaborators to facilitate research collaboration.
- Contribute to the overall maintenance of the lab in a collegial setting.
- Train and mentor graduate students and other junior lab members.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Collect and analyze research data, prepare reports, and adapt new procedures, methods and/or instrumentation relative to research procedures.
- Present research findings at scientific meetings and participate in the preparation of scientific manuscripts and grant proposals.

Required Qualifications
Education:
- Ph.D. in biological sciences or related field.
Work Experience:
- Six years of related work experience.
- Proficiency with routine biochemical techniques, molecular biology, immunology skills (flow cytometry), immunohistochemistry, sterile cell culture, DNA, RNA, and protein-based assays.
- Animal handling/experimentation experience and tissue processing.
Preferred Qualifications
Work Experience:
- Eight years of related work experience.
- Experience in cell signaling and proficiency with routine molecular biology techniques, cell culture, Western blotting, PCR (including quantitative), DNA/plasmid cloning, RNA (transcriptomics and RNA Scope), and MACS cell sorting and flow cytometry.
- Bioinformatics - experience with BLAST and primer design.
Skills
Culturing/ passaging/ & storing of cell lines, primary cell culture of rat and mouse bone tissues.
Bright field microscopy for histological analysis, including immunohistochemistry (brain and other tissues), and confocal microscopy.
The applicant must be self-driven and have the skills to design and conduct laboratory projects/experiments, develop methods, generate, and interpret and report
