Job Description Summary:

This position is a part of the KU Medical Center Communications Department and will work primarily with the Creative Services team, which functions as the marketing arm of the medical center. KU Medical Center serves as the health sciences campus of the University of Kansas and includes the schools of Health Professions, Medicine and Nursing and a large research enterprise.

This role will write and edit for a wide variety of projects, including Kansas Medicine + Science magazine, KU Medicine and KU Nursing magazines, and the KU School of Health Professions newsletter. These stories highlight the research, education and community engagement taking place at the three schools.

The Writer-Editor will assist the associate director of creative services in writing and editing copy that comes from university clients for marketing materials, including annual reports, newsletters, event programs, event fliers, advertising and more.

The Writer-Editor will work collaboratively with other members of the Communications Department, primarily providing content in support of the News and Media Relations team.

Anticipated hiring range: \$54,000 - \$56,000.

Job Description:

Job Duties Outlined:

  • Work in collaboration with the Creative Services team to develop communications and marketing materials for KU Medical Center.
  • Write, review and edit copy for brochures, posters, newsletters, annual reports, magazine articles, videos, publications and presentations.
  • Work closely with various departments and the Executive Vice Chancellor\'s office to write and edit copy for marketing materials.
  • Concept and write news stories about various aspects of the Medical Center.
  • Ensure materials comply with KU Medical Center style and brand specifications.
  • Work with content providers to edit, fact-check and clarify text.
  • Attend meetings, participate in committees, and obtain training related to writing projects.
  • Maintain familiarity with industry practices, AP style and regulatory requirements that affect writing.
  • Manage multiple tasks and set priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Assists with writing video scripts.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor\'s degree or above in journalism, mass communications or strategic communications or other relevant degree.

Work Experience:

  • Three to five years of experience in a position that required extensive writing and editing, such as a reporter, news writer, editor, copy writer, university communicator, public relations professional or other similar role.
  • Experience producing original content for various types of publications and marketing materials, such as magazines, annual reports, newsletters, programs, advertising and brochures.

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:

  • Experience working in higher education communications, nonprofit communications, dvertising agencies or corporate communications.
  • Experience working collaboratively with graphic designers.

Skills:

  • Ability to edit and proofread written materials using university and AP style guides.
  • Ability to collaborate with a team and manage a project from beginning to end.
  • Excellent written, editorial, oral and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

This is a hybrid position that will require a combination of onsite work at our Kansas City campus and remote work.
