Job Description:
35% Disease Model Management
For Drosophila (fruit flies),maintain stock populations, make fly food, manage disposal, label, maintain CO2 tanks, and check/maintain incubators.
Create new transgenic fly lines under the guidance of the PI.
For cells (RPE-1), Cell splitting, create new media, maintain CO2 tanks, and check/maintain incubators.
30% Lab Organization and Maintenance
Order, organize, make stock solutions (e.g. TE buffer), keep electronic inventory, and general lab upkeep.
Collaborate with the PI to ensure the correct inventory and safety of the lab.
35% Research and Projects
Assist the PI and other lab members with their research projects.
Image, label, and measure flies or cells, set up genetic fly crosses, transfect cells, use kits, and basic molecular biology assays.

Required Qualifications:
- B.S./B.A. in Biology or closely related field OR High school/GED and four (4) years experience from job training in another research lab.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with basic molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, Western blot, DNA/RNA isolation, qPCR)

Position Overview:
The Dalton lab in the Department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS) is seeking a full time assistant researcher with interest in molecular biology, genetics, and rare disease. The successful applicant will work within a research group that examines the function of essential genes on diverse rare diseases.
The position currently has funding for 1 year and may be extended contingent on the availability of funding and the needs of the department. The earliest start date will be August 26th, 2024 upon a successful application. The applicant should be organized, motivated, work well with others, have a willingness to learn, and be flexible with managing different responsibilities and projects in the lab.
