Job Description:

50% - General Maintenance, inspection and repair – Assists in the repairs and preventive maintenance for various fire alarm and emergency life safety systems on campus. Performs inspections and minor repairs accordingly.

35% - Responds to emergency calls involving fire alarm and emergency life safety systems. Responds using standard protocols and communication channels. Inspects and reports deficiencies and root causes.

10% - Other related general maintenance work as assigned: Maintains tools, parts and supplies. Assists with other maintenance inspections and needs. Assists with campus wide maintenance activities such as snow removal as needed.

5% - Performs other related work as assigned.

Work Schedule:

7:30am-4pm, Monday through Friday. After probation, this position also has an option for a four-day, 10-hour shift option for Tuesday to Friday 6:30am-5pm.

Required Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or GED equivalency.

  2. Two years of experience in a building or facility service trade (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, grounds, relocation etc.) Associate degree or vocational school certification may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Advertised Salary Range:

No less than $35,776 annually ($17.20 hourly). Salary offers increase with relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Professional life safety system experience as evidenced by application materials.

  2. Professional electrical, HVAC or plumbing experience as evidenced by application materials.

  3. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of skilled crafts and building trades as demonstrated by application materials.

  4. Experience working in a university, college or multi-building campus environment as evidenced by application materials.

Position Overview:

Facilities Services supports KU’s mission of learning, scholarship, student experience and creative endeavor by operating and maintaining the University’s physical plant and grounds. The incumbent will function as part of a team of maintenance staff who are responsible for the instrumentation and life safety systems maintenance program within the Facilities Services department. The incumbent performs inspections, maintains records of equipment, performs proactive and reactive repairs, and may occasionally respond to equipment failures and campus wide emergencies. This position requires the operation of work issued vehicles.

Position Requirements:

  1. Reach, grasp, hold, lift and place moderately heavy loads and heavy loads occasionally (50 lbs) with or without accommodation.

  2. Perform work above normal heights, in confined spaces and extreme temperatures (hot and cold) inside and outdoors.

  3. Operate work issued vehicles for transporting staff and materials

  4. Work occasional planned and unplanned overtime as needed including responding to after-hours emergencies as needed.

  5. Report to work during declared periods of inclement weather.

  6. Must have a valid driver’s license by the time of hire and maintain that license throughout employment.

  7. Must digitally enter work order information and perform other electronic communications which may require carrying an on-call phone.
