Job Description:

55% Administrative - Director of Kansas Scholastic Press Association

  • Work with members of the KSPA board to enhance scholastic journalism throughout the state, including KSPA membership.

  • Manage all aspects of the Kansas Scholastic Press Association, including planning, hosting, and following up on the fall and spring conferences throughout the state.

  • Operate contests for students.

  • Build and maintain a database of possible judges for all contests.

  • Ensure the website is up to date with contest information and other materials.

  • Prepare an annual budget for board approval.

  • Represent KSPA at national meetings.

  • Supervise part-time assistant and student employees.

45% Teaching - Lecturer School of Journalism and Mass Communications:

  • Teach assigned courses each semester in the School. Assignments will depend on the background and expertise of the Director.

  • Perform related service for the school.

  • Direct the summer Jayhawk Media Workshop and coordinate with the Native American Storytelling Workshop.

Position Overview:

The William Allen White School of Journalism & Mass Communications is searching for a Director of Kansas Scholastic Press Association. This is a full-time, Non-Tenure Track, Academic Year position with an anticipated start date of August 18, 2024. This position is Limited Term with an initial appointment period of three years. Appointment renewal will be based on a comprehensive review.

The Director of KSPA serves as an advocate and helps create positive visibility for scholastic journalism in Kansas and beyond. The Director manages operations for the KSPA, and directs the annual summer Jayhawk Media Workshop. This position will also have instructional responsibilities as a lecturer teaching two courses per semester during the academic year. The Director of the Kansas Scholastic Press Association serves as a liaison between the School of Journalism & Mass Communications and KSPA.
