Job Description:
40% Student Services & Communications
Visit with and assist prospective and incoming students/families regarding the admission and enrollment process, including navigating VA/TA and other military-related education benefits and locating relevant academic and student support programs, career services, etc.
Serve as a student concierge for KU Student Success Team members including students’ assigned academic advisor, financial aid advisor and faculty members.
Advise students on maximizing their VA/TA benefits as they pursue their academic and post-college paths, and provide support when they have questions/concerns.
Document and maintain all communication with students resulting from appointments, email, phone, and walk-ins using university-approved systems.
Serve as MASC representative at all prospective and current student tabling opportunities and related events where student connections are created.
Develop rapport and productive relationships with students by creating a community of care with a welcoming environment for students to grow and thrive.
Project a positive, friendly, welcoming experience, particularly when the issue is not easily resolved or requires lengthy explanation.
Create and plan MASC communication strategies; manage MASC web site, listserv and social media in collaboration with the Academic Success Operations team
40% MASC Center Operations & Programming/Event Support
Responsible for all MASC front desk coverage and center operations.
Hire, train, schedule, advise, supervise and evaluate all VA Work Study and student employees to ensure the center is open and operating at optimal levels.
Order and purchase supplies for the center and programs.
Assist the VA Certifying Official during peak periods of student service and as needed. At a minimum, serve as a read-only VA Certifying Official and train student workers in their appropriate level of service in this support area
Participate in the planning and implementation of Veterans Day Week (including a key role in the Vets Day 5K), Hawk Week, Military-Affiliated Community Advocates program and additional MASC programming/events.
20% Collaboration, Planning & Other Duties as assigned by Academic Success Leadership
Attend relevant staff meetings and trainings related to Academic Success Initiatives.
Use University-approved systems for all student records and adhere to Academic Success technology use standards and FERPA guidelines.
Serve on departmental and campus committees as assigned. Examples include:
Serving as a leader in the KU Veterans Alumni Network Executive Council
Serving as the KU Student Veterans of America student organization chapter advisor
Serving on the KU military-affiliated scholarship review committee
Help strategically engage on- and off-campus entities and develop strong partnerships to provide comprehensive support services for military-affiliated students.
Support the department’s strategic efforts, which may include program goals, initiatives, implementation, assessment, and reporting.
Assist with the university’s response to external military- and veteran-friendly surveys.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree with one year of relevant experience, OR a Master's degree.
One (1) year of experience working with veteran or military-affiliated populations inside or outside of an educational context.
One (1) year of experience in professional or student staff hiring, supervision, training, or evaluation.
Strong written communication skills as demonstrated by cover letter and resume.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, e.g. higher education administration, counseling, mass communications.
Familiarity with military-related education benefits, i.e. VA or TA benefits.
Experience working with internal and external/community stakeholders to bolster programs and resources.
Experience in managing mass communications platforms (e.g. web, social media)
Experience with higher education student information systems.
Experience with Microsoft Office products and other relevant software, to include database and web-based programs.
Position Overview:
The Military-Affiliated Services Coordinator supports the Lt. Gen William K. Jones Military-Affiliated Student Center (MASC) initiatives for all military-affiliated students through intentional services and opportunities designed to foster academic success and engagement and provides expertise related to military-affiliated student success that aligns with institutional/unit/division retention initiatives.
The Military-Affiliated Services Coordinator will cultivate opportunities designed to facilitate a successful transition into the academic and social community at KU, from pre-admission to graduation and beyond. Reporting to the MASC Director, this position assists students with navigating campus, identifying campus/VA resources, utilizing various VA and military-related educational benefits, etc.
This position is required to deliver timely, student-centric service to undergraduate, graduate, and online learners at KU. They are required to stay informed of local, regional, and national trends related to military student services and benefits to serve as a resource to students. This role must have knowledge of and experience working with military-affiliated populations and the ability to execute creative and innovative solutions to deliver superior student service.
Unit Overview
The MASC serves as KU’s centralized resource for Military-Affiliated students as they move to, through and beyond the university. The University of Kansas averages 1,600 Military-Affiliated students each year, with more than 900 using VA and/or military TA benefits. The MASC, along with the Academic Success Operations & Technology team, KU at Leavenworth Student Support Services, Academic Success Navigators, and Hawk Link, is part of Academic Success, a division of Academic Affairs at KU. Academic Success advocates for and strategically advances education at the University of Kansas. We work with students from orientation to graduation and beyond.

This is an on-campus, student-facing position and requires working on-site at the Lawrence campus when the center is open. The MASC is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
