Job Description:

45% Student Recruitment and Event Coordination: Oversee, manage and actively participate in on campus programs and events focused on recruiting students to the KU School of Journalism and Mass Communications undergraduate program. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • In collaboration with the Undergraduate Admissions Office and other colleagues across campus and within the School, represent School of Journalism and Mass Communications at on-campus recruitment functions such as Junior Days, Admitted Senior Days, Scholar Days, and prospective student visits.

  • Along with the School’s Impact Advisor, develop a comprehensive recruitment and communication plan, utilizing creative strategies to identify, qualify, and target prospective freshmen and transfer students.

  • Communicate daily with prospective students, families, and high school and community college counselors. Identify and utilize opportunities to leverage KU’s CRM (Slate), social media and personal messaging in overall communication plan.

  • Develop presentations and present to individual students, families, and groups of prospective students and families.

  • Assist with planning and execution of all on-campus events including but not limited to Kansas Scholastic Press Association conferences, JMC-specific recruitment and yield events, Hawk Week Academic Welcome, Rock Chalk Days, Crimson and Blue Days, orientations, and other events.

45% High School and Transfer Student Outreach: Responsible for working with area community colleges and high schools to build a pipeline for students seeking admission to the program. Sample of duties include:

  • Plan, develop, execute, and analyze off-campus recruitment programs and events for prospective JMC students and their families.

  • In collaboration with the Undergraduate Admissions Office and other colleagues across campus and within the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, travel and represent School of Journalism and Mass Communications at off-campus recruitment events, college fairs, community college visits, counselor luncheons, and high school visits based on assigned territory.

  • Work with faculty and staff to promote summer media camps.

  • Connect with area community colleges to communicate transfer student pathways for academic programs in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

  • Develop relationships with middle and high school counselors and teachers in assigned territory to create pipelines for the School of Journalism and Mass Communications with the goal of increasing school-specific visits to campus and the newly remodeled Stauffer-Flint Hall. Maintain database of active contacts.

  • Track inquiry, applicant, and admit pools and advise the deans accordingly.

  • Monitor and analyze recruitment, yield, enrollment, and retention trends and use this data to adjust and enhance outreach strategies.

  • Serve as primary contact for JMCrecruitment@ku.edu email account.

  • Attend appropriate and strategic off-campus high school visits and fairs.

  • Assist in organizing specific visit programs for individual groups or middle/high school programs. Coordinate select outreach programs on campus.

  • Represent the School at regional and national conferences and conventions of journalism education associations.

10% Administrative and other related duties:

  • Supervise the Journalism Student Ambassador Program. Develop training materials, hire new ambassadors, conduct trainings, and evaluate progress. Help the ambassador team develop professionally and work collaboratively.

  • Supervise the recruitment student assistant (when applicable).

  • Work with School of Journalism and Mass Communications coordinator to develop recruitment materials. Manage and maintain material inventory.

  • Participate as an active team member of the Student Services team through attending regular staff meetings and serving on School or University committees, as directed.

  • Complete other recruitment program related duties as assigned.

  1. Experience in working effectively with a variety of student populations, including low-income, first generation, geographic regions, high school, and nontraditional students.

  2. Demonstrated ability to effectively organize time and tasks and work autonomously as evidenced by work experience in application materials.

  3. Experience in public relations activities or work in university admissions and recruitment.

  4. Experience in event planning and execution.

  5. Experience with the University of Kansas.

  6. Experience in sales including implementation of sales cycles to closure.

Position Overview:

With new and revised concentrations and the increasing interest in creating online content, the KU School of Journalism and Mass Communications is seeking an innovative and dynamic recruitment coordinator to recruit students for our programs. Our student services team consistently ranks among the best in our student-centered environment. The recruiter would be sharing information about our exciting programs in Digital Marketing Communications, Advertising & Public Relations, Multimedia Journalism, Media Arts & Production and Sports Media & Society. Duties include data-driven recruitment of prospective students to our four concentrations via on and off-campus events, presentations, and various initiatives. The recruiter will work closely with the communications coordinator, impact advisor/recruitment coordinator, the assistant dean for student services and the staff and faculty of the School to market the School, meet with students and families, and promote the School at various events. This position will also work with area community colleges and high schools to build a pipeline for students seeking admission to the program. Some travel, evening, and weekend work required.

This is a full-time, twelve-month, benefits-eligible, regular appointment reporting to the Assistant Dean for Student Services. Pay and benefits are competitive.
