Sunlighten Assistant Controller in Leawood, Kansas

We’re looking for a detail-oriented and forward-thinking Assistant Controller to ensure the accuracy and integrity of our financial operations. You’ll oversee key accounting processes, including month-end close, financial reporting, and compliance with US GAAP, while managing and guiding support staff in accounts receivable, and general ledger functions. Your efforts will contribute to the preparation of budgets, audits, and tax filings, as well as identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and streamline processes. Duties/Responsibilities:
Manage and execute day-to-day accounting functions, including receivables, cash management, general ledger maintenance, and account reconciliations.
Oversee the month-end close process, including preparing and posting journal entries, reconciling intercompany and related-party transactions, and producing accurate financial statements and reports in accordance with US GAAP.
Maintain fixed asset records, ensuring proper accounting for acquisitions, disposals, and adjustments.
Oversee recurring state and local sales/use tax returns, assist with federal and state income tax filings, and support annual transfer pricing studies and external audits.
Analyze financial statements, conduct research, and assist in the preparation of budgets and other financial planning activities.
Directly manage and provide guidance to support staff in accounts receivable, credit/collections, and general ledger functions while fostering strong cross-departmental relationships.
Establish and enforce policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure financial compliance and operational efficiency.
Stay current with relevant legislation, maintain confidentiality of financial information, and proactively identify and implement process improvements.
Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned, while maintaining professional knowledge through continuous learning and networking.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA preferred).
5+ years of accounting experience
2+ years in a supervisory role
Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting.
Experience with month-end close procedures and financial statement preparation.
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle) and Microsoft Excel.
Experience in sales/use tax compliance and intercompany accounting is desirable.
