The City of Lenexa is currently hiring for a full-time Animal Control Officer I in our Police Department. Position Summary

This civilian position involves protecting persons and property from stray, wild and dangerous animals by responding to calls for service, securing animals, enforcing ordinances and resolving issues involving violations and complaints.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responds to and investigates complaints and reported bite cases involving stray, wild or unrestrained animals; captures and impounds animals as necessary and identifies/contacts owners; talks to owners and attempts to re-solve problems; issues citations if necessary; prepares reports.

  • Euthanizes injured or sick animals and disposes of carcasses.

  • Picks up and disposes of dead animals from citizens and streets.

  • Conducts general vehicular patrol of the City for animal control purposes

  • Educates the public about responsible animal care.

  • Drives City-owned vehicle to perform essential functions of position.

  • Testifies in administrative as well as judicial proceedings.

  • Prepares a variety of reports as required.

  • Collateral duties as assigned.

  • Compliance with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

Minimum: High school diploma or G.E.D. Must possess and maintain a valid driver-s license.

Environment and Physical Factors

This position requires good physical condition including the ability and endurance to sprint, lift, crawl, climb, etc. to respond effectively to calls for service, capture domestic and wild animals, as well as perform all duties required; the ability to work in extreme weather conditions; the ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods; must have 20/40 visual acuity or correctable and adequate night vision to read addresses, license tags and gather evidence; must have good olfactory sensory capability; the ability to hear in both ears sufficient to hear radio communications, detect sounds and gather information related to animal control activity.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting rate of pay is $20.20 - $22.08 per hour dependent on minimum qualifications and directly related experience. The City offers a highly competitive compensation package including:
