This Direct-Hire position is in the Food and Drug Administration and is located in the Office of Regulatory Science which provides a focal point for all aspects of Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA) Field Laboratories and serves as the Office of Regulatory Affairs' headquarters for scientific and technical staff. Responsibilities Conducts studies and approves industry analytical procedures in various areas of agency concern relating to toxic and/or nutritional elements and trace metals. Plans and directs the development and modification of sample preparation procedures and analytical methods for highly complex, unusual and novel samples and regulatory situations Plans, directs and presents workshops and seminars concerning current research and state-of-the-art technology. Counsels and advises other field analysts and field investigators engaged in problem analyses, analytical studies, research or in complex toxic and/or nutritional elements and trace metal inspections. Adapts new scientific information, incorporating it into existing concepts and methods to solve current problems. Troubleshoots instrumentation issues and, problems that arise when evaluating data. Leads, develops, plans, coordinates, and performs research and method development and/or validation in accordance with FDA priorities. Searches all pertinent references and literature; prepares an experimental design; evaluates and selects agency and non-agency laboratories to perform collaborative work; analyzing, evaluating, and interpreting all data. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications The position of Chemist falls under the 1320 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-13, you must meet the following: Basic Requirements A. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. You must possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service that includes experience: working on toxic and/or nutritional elements and trace metals; evaluating new instruments and equipment; troubleshooting instrumentation issues and problems that arise when evaluating data.
