We are currently accepting applications for a Crime Analyst I or II (DOE) in our Lenexa Police Department. The ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • strong IT and computer skills

  • analytic and predictive thinking to predict, track and inform crime identification and prevention techniques used by the department

    Position Summary

    The Crime Analyst (civilian position) collects, categorizes, and analyzes qualitative and quantitative data pertaining to past and current criminal activity; prepares and disseminates reports using various illustrative and statistical methods and makes recommendations pertaining to existing and anticipated criminal activity to internal departments and external agencies.

    Key Responsibilities

  • Analysis : Analyzes, interprets and makes deductions from various data sources to identify current and future crime patterns or trends; examines and provides recommendations regarding all reported crimes for commonalities for investigative or proactive policing purposes; gathers local crime reports from all sources, including other agencies and analyzes data; learns, identifies and applies modern practices based on current trends in the crime analysis profession.

  • Dissemination of information: Provides accurate, timely and relevant analysis of crime patterns and trends, both inside and outside the jurisdiction, that aid in the efficient deployment of Department, City and partnering agency resources; increases apprehensions and the clearance of criminal cases; fills requests from units for analytical examination of specific crimes and patterns of crime in specific areas; issues crime specific bulletins to a variety of interested parties; maintains database of business contact information; utilizes technology to distribute press releases, crime data, bulletins and maps internally and across the Internet; makes public speaking appearances in support of activities; functions as liaison with other police agencies to exchange and update information on criminal activity and prevention; maintains rosters of area police organizations; attends area-wide meetings with representatives of Lenexa and other agencies to share information about crimes.

  • Mentor and Trainer (only for Crime Analyst II position): Contributes to and carries out the future direction of the Crime Analysis Unit; takes a lead role in acquiring interns and volunteers to assist in crime analysis; mentors and trains other members of the Crime Analysis Unit and/or other employees whose collateral duties are part of the crime analysis

  • Required to drive a vehicle, to include City-owned vehicles, to off-site training courses, meetings, and/or other City facilities.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor-s degree in related field and three years of experience in crime analysis work or related statistical social services research or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Valid driver-s license.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor-s degree in related field and five years of experience in crime analysis work at the Lenexa Police Department or seven years of crime analysis related work and four years at the Lenexa Police Department., or any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Must possess Crime Analyst Certification through an accredited agency such as the Certified Law Enforcement Analysts (CLEA) through the International Associate of Crime Analysts.

    Compensation and benefits

    Hiring range is from $50,452 to $67,048 dependent on qualifications and directly related experience.
