Director of Database Management


Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, the Director of Database Management will be responsible for the planning, oversight, and implementation of data projects in support of the University’s Enterprise Resource Planning and Student Information Systems. This position also provides data-related technical guidance to direct reports and leads project teams with cross-functional representation. The individual will also ensure timely and accurate development/design of integrated data solutions to complex business problems. This is a supervisory position.


• Develop strategies that enable the Data Management Team to fulfill the prioritized database build and support requirements of the University; • Make recommendations to upper management to procure licenses for new databases and to report software needs for targeted applications; • Act as liaison among management, technical staff and subject matter advisors to understand business issues, troubleshoot problems, direct root cause analysis and drives development of cost effective resolutions for data anomalies. Engages directly in this capacity and coaches others to exhibit appropriate behaviors in such a role; • Provide business and IT project support by performing data management process assessments, data quality control reviews, data analysis, querying and manipulating data to identify trends and data quality anomalies, and documenting findings; • Develop business procedures and data management policies for ensuring data accuracy and control; • Ability to communicate with and lead functional teams across the university to meet planned goals; • Manage Data Management staff and associated development activities, including, capacity planning, software planning, performance tuning, database and data security (including data encryption deployment where required) and database operations; • Address databases security across all supported environments to ensure data is secure and encrypted over the network (from the application server to/from the database server); • Continue to drive the approach to consolidate databases on shared/virtual servers to make cost-effective use of the databases licenses we own and to stay within licensing requirements; • Establish and maintain solid working relationships with appropriate business units across the university, and outside vendors. • Engage in development and deployment activities providing technical guidance to the project team. • Work collaboratively with other Information Technology teams in addressing capacity growth and capacity planning, data protection and backup/recovery requirements; • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/ WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS AND DESIRED SKILLS: • University Degree and 10 years of related Technology and Project Management experience. • Previous experience in Higher Education. • Knowledge of Higher Education regulatory requirements. • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills. • Proven influence, management and decision-making skills. • Expert at leading the development and integration of data solutions. • Ability to multitask and lead in a fast-paced dynamic environment. • Expert at learning new system applications/functions. • Proven change agent.
