How will you make an impact?

The EHS Specialist is an advisor on EHS aspects to the Leadership team and the Functional Managers at Thermo Fisher, The World Leader in Serving Science. The EHS Specialist will work closely with the Senior EHS Manager to continue to drive a Safety-First culture at the Lenexa, Kansas site.

What will you do?

  • Work closely with employees in solving safety concerns raised by employees.

  • Participate in incident investigations and ensure root cause countermeasures are identified to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents. Review and analyze accident and spill data to identify trends or areas requiring additional focus.

  • Perform quantitative fit testing for employees, as needed.

  • Participate in Gemba walks, find opportunities related to EH&S, and remediate safety concerns.

  • Facilitate and/or conduct industrial hygiene monitoring including air sampling and noise monitoring.

  • Update Emergency Action Plan (ERP) as needed, to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and corporate standards. This includes training, conducting drills, and coordination with the local authorities.

  • Be a safety advocate. Proactively look for opportunities to improve safety programs and educate and inspire employees to do the same. Drive and implement changes as needed.

  • Maintain the Hazard Communication Plan for a chemical packaging and storage facility.

  • Deliver safety training as required.

  • Perform periodic audits to identify potential EHS hazards, program deficiencies, and liabilities and coordinate the closure of gaps identified.

  • Lead and participate in job safety and ergonomics analysis, make recommendations, and work with the appropriate department to implement changes when necessary.

  • Maintain EHS database and records, including OSHA log, and generate reports as needed.

  • Liaise with Travelers on Workers’ compensation cases. Also, work closely with medical providers on managing injury/illness cases.

  • Work with project teams and ensure established safety standards are met while implementing new projects.

  • Drive a focus on safety by applying lean tools (5S, Gemba, Visual Management, root cause analysis, kaizen, etc.).

Required Qualifications and experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, or related scientific disciplines such as Biology, Chemistry, or Engineering.

  • 3+ years in a safety or environmental health and safety (EHS) role.

  • Experience in implementing local, state, and federal environmental, health, and safety rules and regulations.

  • HAZWOPER training experience is strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Good technical and analytical skills with the ability to successfully manage multiple tasks and daily responsibilities.

  • Good presentation and communication skills

  • Great teammate, able to work effectively with others.

  • Good knowledge of OSHA regulation
