    Position Summary

    This is an apprentice level position in Facilities Management Division performing preventative and predictive maintenance and repair of mechanical systems (e.g.: HVAC, electrical, plumbing) and general construction work. Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Facilities Foreman and in a team setting to complete assigned tasks and prescheduled maintenance jobs.

    Key Responsibilities

  • Performs routine preventive maintenance and repairs on City equipment and buildings.

  • Heating, Venting, Air Conditioning and Cooling: Installs diagnoses and repairs all equipment control problems, pneumatic and electrical. Replaces major components such as compressors, air handler and condensing unit fan motors, expansion valves, etc.

  • Operates and maintains hot water and steam heating boilers at City facilities. Conducts inspections when necessary.

  • Plumbing: Installs, diagnoses and repairs fixtures, piping, sewage and potable water, treatment systems, etc.

  • Electrical: Diagnoses and repair fixtures, wiring, motor starters, lamps, switches and receptacles.

  • General Construction and Maintenance: Performs repairs related to carpentry, painting, concrete, dry wall, appliance maintenance, floor covering, etc.

  • Appliances: Diagnoses, repairs and installs.

  • Installs and/or pulls communications and low voltage cable and wires throughout facilities.

  • Updates work orders, hours and repair information, in the Facilities database daily.

  • Performs containment and removal of ice/snow from facility walkways and public access areas

  • Must be able to work some overtime in relation to the Division-s emergency call out system as well as scheduled maintenance.

  • Responds for snow and ice removal and other emergencies including weekends, before and after hours, and holidays.

    Additional Examples of Work Performed

  • Assists with City-s special events as necessary.

  • Follows all preventative maintenance procedures, and suggests improvements and modifications as warranted.

  • Inventories and orders parts as directed by supervisor.

  • Communicates with customers on performance of Technical Work Orders.

  • Assists outside contractors with City projects when required. Directs contractor to proper work location and monitors contractor-s work product. Accompanies contractor into secured areas.


    Minimum: High school diploma or G.E.D. and three years of experience in one of the building maintenance fields, or two years technical or trade school training certification and two years of experience in one of the building maintenance fields. Must possess EPA HVAC universal certification or obtain within 24 months from hire date and valid drivers- license.

    Desired: Apprentice level experience with HVAC, electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems.

    Environmental and Physical Factors

    This is medium physical work requiring: ability to sit, stand and walk; ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to approximately 100 lbs.; ability to work in cramped or confined spaces; ability to work in extreme weather conditions of all kinds; ability tolerate exposure to pollen, traffic and machine exhaust; ability to communicate information routinely; hear warning alarms, radio transmissions, etc. routinely; ability to work safely in hazardous situations; ability to traverse open grounds and construction areas; ability to distinguish colors; ability to distinguish smells; ability to step up and out of tandem truck or vehicle; ability to crawl, stoop, bend, climb, twist and maintain balance as needed.

    Compensation and Benefits

    Hiring range is from $22.19 to $25.72 dependent on qualifications and directly related experience. The City of Lenexa offers a comprehensive benefits package including:
