The City of Lenexa, Kansas Fire Department is currently accepting applications for Firefighter EMT and/or Firefighter Paramedic.

Position Summary

The firefighter position works under the direct supervision of a Fire Lieutenant or Fire Captain performing firefighting, technical rescue, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, fire prevention education and other duties as assigned. A major portion of time is spent working towards mastery of firefighting and emergency medical knowledge, skills and abilities. This position is designated as essential, requiring the member to report to work in a variety of situations, including emergency callbacks.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops knowledge and skills supporting fire suppression, emergency medical, technical rescue, hazardous materials, fire prevention, life safety and domestic preparedness programs.

  • Provides fire suppression, emergency medical, technical rescue, hazardous materials, fire prevention, life safety and domestic preparedness services for the community.

  • Performs inspections and maintains personal safety equipment, fire station fixed facilities, apparatus and vehicles, small tools and equipment.

  • Participates in regular training activities to strengthen skills and abilities in all response disciplines.

  • Successful completion of the next available fire apparatus operator certification program following completion of developmental period. Once accomplished, works towards mastery in the areas of fire apparatus operator and tiller apparatus operations.

  • Drives City and/or personal vehicle to perform essential functions of position.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • 18 years of age at time of employment offer

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent

  • Valid driver-s license with insurable driving record throughout employment

  • Firefighter I and II certificates and EMT certification

  • Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations certification

  • Successful completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within 1 year prior to application submission

  • Fire Service Entrance Exam (FSEE) minimum score of 70%

    Hiring Process

    The application and certifications must be submitted by July 19th, 2024 at 5pm CST.

  • Structured in-person panel interviews will be scheduled from July 22-July 26, 2024. Consideration will be given for candidates who live more than 2 hours away.

  • Candidates selected to move forward to the next step in the process will be contacted and scheduled for a fire department company activity July 30 - August 1, 2024.

  • Fire Chief interviews will be completed as part of the company activity July 30 - August 1, 2024.

    Offers of employment are conditioned upon successful completion of a pre-employment psychological evaluation, physical, drug screen and background check.

    Compensation and Benefits

    Starting Salary for Firefighters is $53,000/year, Firefighter Paramedic is $58,300/year.

    *2024 salary range adjustments are slated to be approved by City Council by the end of July 2024 based upon a market comparison study.
