The City of Lenexa is accepting applications for a paid summer 2025 Parks and Recreation Intern. This internship offers hands-on experience in program development, event coordination, and daily operations. This role allows you to contribute to community events, assist with recreation activities, and complete a special project showcasing your program or event management skills.
Hours and Location:
Parks and Recreation operates throughout Lenexa with varying schedules; the intern should anticipate evening and weekend hours for events and programs.
Work a consistent on-site schedule of 35 - 40 hours per week as mutually agreed upon with the supervisor.
Internship dates are flexible, with an estimated duration from mid-May to mid-August.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with recreation programs and events under the guidance of recreation managers and supervisors.
Support the planning and execution of major events, including:
The Great Lenexa BBQ Battle
Community Days Parade
Freedom Run
Movie Nights and Farmers- Markets.
Gain experience working alongside staff in recreation operations.
Contribute to summer camp activities, including field trip supervision.
Complete a special project demonstrating program or event management skills.
Qualifications:
Required:
Current college student with at least 30 credit hours in Parks and Recreation or a related field.
Ability to work Monday-Friday, 8am - 5pm, with flexibility for events during evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred:
60+ credit hours and coursework or an internship requirement in Parks and Recreation, Sports Management, or Wildlife Management.
The rate of pay is $17.00 per hour.
Physical and Environmental Factors:
This role requires lifting and moving supplies, standing for extended periods, and working outdoors in varying conditions.
Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
