    Position Summary

    Under general supervision of the Planning Manager, the Planning Specialist I position performs a variety of activities related to the development review process and assists in special projects for all divisions of Community Development and collaborates with other departments within the City. Duties include performing site plan and development reviews; review and inspection related to the enforcement of City codes, plans or programs, such as minor building plan review (decks, sheds, etc.); fence permit review and inspection; and assisting with the administration of land use regulatory controls and long-range planning activities. This position may also perform work related to compiling, organizing and analyzing statistical data or other information for planning activities and studies; reviewing operational budgets; analyzing workflow processes; and assisting in writing grant proposals. This position serves as a leader on various multifaceted projects.

    Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Acts as Planner of the Day on a rotating basis - responds to public and interdepartmental inquiries regarding development proposals, current zoning, future plans for vacant property, land use, comprehensive planning and other planning-related issues.

  • Maintains and updates database and geographic information system (GIS) files.

  • Reviews applications to the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals to ensure compliance with the adopted rules and regulations of the Unified Development Code, including the preparation and presentation of staff reports at evening meetings.

  • Reviews regulatory permits and licenses, such as applications for home occupations, certificates of occupancy, sign permits and fence permits for compliance with building code-related and/or planning-related requirements.

  • Performs on-site inspections to ensure construction is in compliance with approved plans.

  • Conducts research and analysis to develop and/or update studies, reports and codes in connection with the current and long-range physical, social and economic development initiatives of the City, including the Comprehensive Plan.

  • Researches various technical, administrative, financial, analytical and statistical topics at the request of department and division leaders. Interprets data, identifies alternatives, presents findings and justifies conclusions. Makes recommendations based on data and other findings.

  • Prepares graphics, maps, presentations, tables and charts to illustrate research and information. Compiles materials and prepares or assists in the preparation of reports, presentations, manuals and other publications.

  • Utilizes the department's enforcement processes to respond to and resolve concerns, complaints and inquiries that may be difficult or sensitive and may require testifying in court.

  • Drives City and/or personal vehicle to perform essential functions of position.

    Qualifications

    Minimum: Bachelor-s degree in urban planning, engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, geography or related field. Must possess and maintain a valid driver-s license. Must complete required NIMS IS-100 and IS-700 training within three months of employment.

    Desired: Master-s degree in urban planning, engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, geography, public administration or a related field. At least one year of experience in the planning profession. A planning-related professional internship may serve as experience.

    Compensation and Benefits

    Hiring range is from $54,303-$62,952 dependent on qualifications and directly related experience. The City of Lenexa offers a comprehensive benefits package including:
