The City of Lenexa Community Development Department-s Stormwater Division is accepting applications for a paid summer 2025 Stormwater Intern. This internship offers hands-on experience with infrastructure projects and maintenance activities that help enhance and protect the local environment. Interns will gain practical knowledge in stormwater management, utilize advanced tools like GIS, and contribute to impactful community projects. This opportunity provides valuable insight into municipal stormwater systems while making a meaningful difference.

Hours and Location:

  • The Stormwater Division operates out of Lenexa City Hall, typically from 8:00am and 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, with flexibility within a set schedule of approximately 40 hours per week

  • Internship start and end dates are flexible, with an estimated duration from mid-May to mid-August.

    Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform field inspections, including:

  • Outfall inspections in riparian areas.

  • Maintenance and construction inspections for green infrastructure.

  • Erosion and sediment control inspections at construction sites.

  • Support stormwater infrastructure maintenance, such as:

  • Maintaining storm drains, inlet structures, and erosion control systems.

  • Managing vegetation, inspecting channels and piping, and conducting storm pipe camera inspections.

  • Use asset management and GIS software for data management.

  • Assist with problem-solving during construction and maintenance projects.

  • Drive city or personal vehicles to job sites.

    Qualifications:

  • Required:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Current enrollment in a higher education program pursuing a bachelor-s degree in engineering, environmental science, construction science, or a related field.

  • Valid driver-s license.

  • Preferred:

  • Coursework or experience in civil/environmental engineering, stormwater principles, GIS, or construction science.

    The rate of pay is $17.00 per hour.

    Physical and Environmental Factors:

    This role requires working outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, and navigating uneven terrain at active construction sites. Must be able to distinguish colors and hear warning signals.

    Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check.
