Do you have a desire to work outdoors and take care of the environment? Come join the City of Lenexa crew in the Municipal Services Department as a Stormwater Maintenance Worker. The Municipal Services Department is a nationally accredited agency by the American Public Works Association.

The Stormwater Maintenance Worker position is an entry level position that is responsible for maintaining the stormwater infrastructure in Lenexa, KS. We will provide you with on-the-job training and help you earn your CDL. You will have the opportunity to learn and grow through the career track program to achieve levels I, II, and III.

Position Summary

This is entry-level skilled work in maintaining storm drains, inlet structures, native vegetation, erosion control structures, water conveyance systems including underground piping, open channels (natural & improved), detention and retention ponds and system inspection and verification of storm drainage infrastructure. Work is performed under the direction of a Stormwater Foreman, serving on a work crew of five or fewer.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of manual labor involving maintenance and repairs to storm drainage systems which include shovel work, spreading rock, loading or unloading trucks, transporting construction material, cutting tall grass and weeds, cleaning drainage structures, planting and weeding of erosion control type grasses and plants.

  • Assists in the construction and maintenance of stream stabilization and restorations.

  • Performs storm sewer system repair and replacement duties.

  • Operates single and tandem axle dump trucks, farm tractors, snow removal equipment, mowing equipment, skid steer loaders, backhoes, front-end loaders, street sweepers, jet-vac, excavator, hand and power tools and other mechanical equipment.

  • Performs native vegetation management including weed eating, herbicide application, mowing and prescribed burning.

  • Performs -walk-around inspections- on equipment prior to operation, replenishes fluid levels and completes required log. Operates all machinery in a safe and judicious manner according to the manufacturer's operation manual. Cleans and performs routine maintenance and minor repairs to assigned equipment as needed. Reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisor.

  • Responds to snow and ice removal and other emergencies including weekends, before and after hours and holidays.

  • Drives City and/or personal vehicle to perform essential functions of position.

    Qualifications

    Minimum: High school diploma or G.E.D. or two years of experience in construction or landscape-related field. Must possess and maintain a valid Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements or obtain within 180 days from hire date. Must possess Work Zone Safety Certification, including Flagger. Must complete required NIMS IS-100 and IS-700 training within three months of hire.

    Environment and Physical Factors

    This position requires the ability to sit, stand and walk; the ability to lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing up to approximately 60 lbs.; the ability to work in cramped or confined spaces; hear warning alarms, radio transmissions, etc. routinely; the ability to work safely in hazardous situations; traverse open grounds and construction areas; the ability to step up and out of tandem truck or vehicle; and the ability to crawl, stoop, bend, climb, twist and maintain balance as needed.

    This position requires the ability to work in extreme weather conditions of all kinds; the ability to tolerate exposure to pollen, traffic and machine exhaust; the ability to tolerate exposure to smoke from prescribed burning; the ability to work out-of-doors and in inclement weather in dirty, wet, dusty, natural areas including woodlands and wetland sites.

    Salary/Compensation and Benefits

    The hiring range for the Street Maintenance Worker I is $19.32 to $21.11 per hour.
