\ \ Assistant Professor, Sorghum Breeding and Genetics\ \ Department: 3670010040 Agronomy\ Job no: 517085\ Employment type: Academic / Faculty - 12 month\ Location: Manhattan, Kansas\ Worksite: On-site requirement\ Categories: Agriculture, Education / Instructional, Agronomy, Plant Sciences\ Pay Grade: 001\ \ \ About This Role:\ Assistant Professor, Sorghum Breeding and Genetics\ \ 12-month, tenure track position, 80% Research, 20% Teaching\ \ The Agronomy Department at Kansas State University is seeking an Assistant Professor to develop an innovative research and teaching program in sorghum breeding and genetics to address objectives that enhance the productivity, sustainability, and profitability of sorghum production in Kansas and the Great Plains. Responsibilities include leading a breeding program to develop and release new sorghum germplasm, parent lines, and hybrids. Areas of innovation could include germplasm characterization, application of functional genomics, statistical genetics, and applied molecular breeding approaches to sorghum breeding. Specific research targets may include abiotic and biotic constraints to production and pursuit of improvement for productivity and profitability. The presence of a large and diverse community of sorghum researchers with the KSU Center for Sorghum Improvement and USDA-CGAHR provides ample opportunity for cross-disciplinary collaboration. The incumbent is expected to develop an externally funded research program including the training of graduate students, peer-reviewed publication of research results, and promoting collegiality within the KSU and broader communities. Responsibilities include teaching courses in plant breeding/genetics, and the development of commercially relevant improvements in sorghum through public-private collaborations. • Ph.D. in plant breeding or genetics with extensive experience in molecular biology and genetics.
• Experience in field-based plant genetics and molecular breeding research with cultivated crops, and with genetic decision tools and application of these tools in breeding.
• Proven ability to publish research results in peer-reviewed journals commensurate with current career level, and strong potential for securing extramural funding.
• Committed to graduate student mentoring and teaching.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and a commitment to advancing diversity in the department.

\ Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in sorghum breeding and genetics.
• Experience in plant genetics and molecular breeding with a focus on objectives of commercial relevance.
• Skills to leverage digital and data science in the disseminate of program activities and scientific findings.
• Experience leading or working as part of an interdisciplinary research team.
• International research experience.
• Demonstrated experience in grant writing and obtaining extramural funding.
• Experience in teaching at the university level with the ability to inspire and provide leadership development for undergraduate and graduate students.
