Kansas State University\'s College of Education invites nominations and applications for the Manhattan-based position of Chair of the Department of Special Education, Counseling, and Student Affairs. The Chair serves as the spokesperson and advocate for the Department both within and outside the University. This position offers an opportunity for providing dynamic leadership, encouraging creativity and innovation, and supporting colleagues in furthering the work of the Department in a Research I university.

We seek a candidate who is a dynamic leader who will continue the Department\'s reputation. This person should be dedicated to quality teaching and scholarly endeavors, and concerned for the professional development of faculty, staff, and students. The successful candidate will develop, lead, and support both on-campus and online programs and will be expected to provide key leadership in exploring and creating new programming and establishing new partnerships related to the Department\'s expertise. The candidate will demonstrate well developed communication and interpersonal, organizational, and management skills.

Description of Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership for the Department to advance its goals in concert and alignment with the College and its vision, mission, and goals;
  • Ensure faculty members are appropriately mentored in their teaching, research, and service responsibilities to enhance their prospects for career success;
  • Manage the academic, administrative, and operational functions of the Department;
  • Facilitate Departmental activities and foster a collegial environment and a commitment to continual improvement;
  • Encourage and expand the Department\'s participation in seeking grants and contracts;
  • Build strong relationships with constituencies relating to the Department\'s mission and programs;
  • Enhance programs and develop viable new programs;
  • Collaborate with and assist the Dean in all relevant initiatives;
  • Promote and support excellence of faculty in teaching, research and scholarship, and service;
  • Maintain a record of scholarly accomplishment;
  • Teach graduate level courses in a degree track in the department;
  • Take an active role in professional organizations and university service; and
  • Ensure continued alignment of counseling programs with the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) standards.

The Department of Special Education, Counseling, and Student Affairs is one of three departments in the College of Education. The Department provides graduate-level programs in Academic Advising, Counseling, Special Education, and Student Affairs. Online programs are offered in Academic Advising (a graduate certificate, MS, and a PhD in Leadership in Academic Advising), which were developed in collaboration with NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising. Online programs are also offered in Counseling Education (EdS in School Counseling and PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision) which are CACREP-accredited. The MS and EdD in Special Education are offered both on campus and online. In Student Affairs, an on-campus MS in College Student Development, and ann online PhD in Student Affairs in Higher Education are offered. Additionally, service courses in Special Education are offered through the Department for undergraduates.
