Agricultural Research Service Student Trainee (Biological Science) in Manhattan, Kansas
Summary This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Plains Area (PA), at the Center for Grain and Animal Health Research Unit in Manhattan, KS. In this position, you will assist in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment. Responsibilities Maintains, calibrates, and modifies equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures. Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies grain and flour samples for analysis. Maintains knowledge of wheat or cereal grain chemistry. Keeps detailed records of experimental data. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. PATHWAYS ELIGIBILITY All applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a student on at least a half-time schedule at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program. GS-05 Education: Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree. Physical Demands The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending. In many situations, the duration of the activity (such as most of a workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination. Work Environment The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts, which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals or working outdoors. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves. Applicants will be assessed/evaluated through application of the agency developed qualification standard for internship positions, which is based solely on level of education. Education Additional Information Student Interns must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of the appointment. Incumbents will be required to provide proof of continued enrollment and good standing (GPA of 2.0 or equivalent) each semester or grading period throughout the internship program. Failure to do so will result in termination of the appointment. Upon completion of all program requirements, Pathways Interns may be converted to a term, career-conditional or career appointment within 120 days following successful completion of all their education; however, conversion is not guaranteed. The full performance level (FPL) of the position to which converted may be up to the GS-05 level. This position may be eligible to telework up to four days per week, based upon the duties of the position. This position may also be eligible for flexible work arrangements as determined by agency policy and any applicable collective bargaining agreements.
