Works at the direction of the Electric Superintendent. The Electric Lineman performs skilled work in the construction and maintenance of the electric distribution system. The employee in this position is responsible for exercising judgment as to the details of assigned work within prescribed operating procedures. The Electric Lineman is responsible for maintenance of electric lines, electric equipment and transformers and meters. The work is performed in potentially hazardous conditions due to the presence of energized electrical conductors and accessories. Work is performed according to departmental procedures, practices and safety regulations.


+ Works on all single phase and three phase applications in the electrical distribution system.

+ Works with high voltage using hot stick and rubber gloves.

+ Trims trees and climbs poles where not accessible to bucket trucks

+ Operates chain saws, tree pruners, and other necessary tree trimming equipment.

+ .Drives bucket truck, operates and works from the bucket truck

+ Climbs and works from a ladder if necessary

+ Trouble shoots electrical distribution problems.

+ Builds and hooks up transformer banks.

+ Wires according to color code.

+ Sets and changes out electric poles.

+ Sets pad mounts and hangs transformers.

+ Builds single phase and three phase meters.

+ Installs underground primary and secondary.

+ Operates trencher and backhoe for installations.

+ Installs street light poles, street lights and wiring.

+ Assist with the maintenance of the City's substations.

+ Assist with the maintenance of vehicles and equipment.


+ Complies with City ordinances and personnel policies.

+ Assists other City departments and performs other duties as assigned.


Experience: A minimum experience of five years with a construction crew on electrical distribution, four of which had to be in an approved Apprentice Program. Completion of an Apprentice program is required for employment.

Education: High School diploma or GED is required. Additional training in electrical power distribution is desirable.

License/Certification: Requires possession of a valid Kansas Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Additional licenses or certifications related to electrical distribution work is desirable. Must be insurable by the City's insurance carrier.

Technical Skills, knowledge and Ability: Thorough knowledge of all primary circuit feeds, load consumption, metering ratios, electrical hook-ups, safety procedures and all types of transformer banks. The ability to operate a bucket truck, tension equipment and meters, fault locators and other related equipment.

Problem Solving: Problem solving is a fundamental requirement of this position. For example, problems may include repairing lines and poles in adverse weather conditions and determining when electrical wires are hot.

Decision Making: Extensive decision making is a fundamental requirement of this position. Recognition and following sound safety procedures is a primary decision when approaching any electrical maintenance or construction project. Decisions may include the equipment and materials needed for a job, when to shut down electricity for maintenance and repair, and what safety equi pment is needed in a particular operation.

Supervision: Supervision is provided by the Electric Superintendent. Job related decisions are determined by the Electrical Superintendent. Employee may have supervisory responsibilities over other employees on occasion.

Financial Accountability: This employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the department. May make purchases at the direction of the department head.

Personal Relations: Has frequent contact with the public and City personnel. Must be able to communicate and relate to others in a friendly, open manner.

Working Conditions: Adverse weather conditions, working with live power lines, frequently working from a bucket truck are factors in this position.

Special Conditions: The employee must have a personal phone and make their phone number available for contact.

Physical Requirements: This position operates primarily in an outdoor environment. Physical ability is required to get into easements not accessible by trucks, climbing poles, pulling wire, lifting up to one hundred (100) pounds, flexibility to move in and out of bucket trucks and ditches with ease.
