EmberHope Youthville, a leading provider of child welfare services throughout Kansas and San Antonio, Texas is currently seeking a Full-time Residential Specialist for our Newton, KS location. This person will provide a safe and secure teaching environment for youth and a working environment that encourages effective staff teamwork, interdependence and ethical behavior. Serve as a role model in carrying out the EmberHope Youthville mission, values and vision.

How you will spend your time in this job:

+ 40% Teach and counsel youth on appropriate skills and behaviors

+ 30% Provides and fosters a loving, caring and safe environment

+ 20% Maintain and prepare records

+ 10% Cottage management


+ Be 21 years of age or older.

+ Have a High School diploma or equivalent required. Three semester hours of college-leveled study in adolescent development, psychology, or a related subject or must be actively and continuously working toward the completion of the three semester hours preferred.

+ One year of experience as a child care worker or house parent in a facility serving youth of the same age.

+ Maintain agency-required training.

+ Have successful work/volunteer experience with youth.

+ Have the ability to work various shift and weekends including overtime.

+ Required to physically assist in the verbal and physical restraint of youth by utilizing appropriate SCM techniques. Physical restraint techniques include the ability to support another adult’s weigh, twisting and turning maneuver, and an overall intense physical exertion.

+ See well enough to read reports, monitor youth, drive a vehicle, and observe discrete behaviors. Hear well enough to converse on telephone and hear comments mumbled under breath. Speak well enough to teach skills, give feedback, discuss strategies and converse on telephone. Body movement or mobility to track behaviors of youth moving around residence. Ability to walk up stairs, get into and out of vehicle, accompany youth to off campus appointments.

+ Have the dexterity to write, cook, type on a keyboard and help with recreational activities.

+ Have the strength to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. alone and additional weight with assistance and the stamina to work on your feet, as needed for 12-hour shifts.

+ Be able to tolerate constant interruptions, inappropriate behaviors from youth and the potential for verbal and physical threats.
