Garmin Electrical Engineer-Manufacturing (Process Engineer 2) in Olathe, Kansas

The secret to success is in the process, at least for these engineers. Our process engineers not only improve production and repair methods – layout, lean production flow, tooling/product equipment, material, fabrication, etc. – they also determine space requirements to ensure efficiency in manufacturing and repair processes in the industrial plant. Their ultimate goal: to continually improve products, processes and personnel. Our process engineer position is open on the following team:

  • Electrical Engineering – calibration and performance verification process for products

We are looking for a full-time Process Engineer 2 for our Electrical Engineering team at headquarters in Olathe, Kansas. The Electrical Engineering Team (EET) is responsible for the calibration and performance verification processes for Garmin products produced in the Olathe, KS facility. The units are typically calibrated and tested using automated equipment due to the quantity and complexity of the test steps. The Process Engineer’s responsibility is to assemble and maintain the test equipment and procedures, while monitoring test metrics to identify opportunities to improve throughput. Other essential functions include:

May perform as a leader for small projects or sub projects as part of a greater project, following established procedures:

  • Collaborate and add value through participation in design reviews; Applies design for manufacturability guidelines to design reviews and provides alternative solutions as appropriate

  • Assesses factory associates for certification to a process

  • Develops designed experiments for process and quality improvements

  • Analyzes processes for quality improvements and provides justification for purchases as needed

  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills in collaboration with vendors that produce custom parts or equipment

  • Analyzes data to determine quality trends, finds technical root causes and implement corrective actions for given problems

  • Design custom tooling as needed for specific applications

  • Provide reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem solving techniques

  • Serve as a mentor to less experienced process engineers (Process Engineer 1)

  • Apply a sense of urgency, commitment and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion

  • Develops more complex process instructions for manufacturing associates

  • Estimate level of effort for a task including calculating build times

  • Attends continuous improvement meetings and serves as a member of Kaizen teams

  • Utilizes expert CAD software skills to model complex tools

  • Apply Garmin’s Mission Statement and Quality Policy and enthusiastically exhibit a desire to see Garmin succeed


  • Research and development of new, cutting edge automation concepts

  • Designing, testing and validating of all aspects of the electrical hardware design

  • Integration of all equipment components and I/O

  • Design and develop basic software applications

  • Applies knowledge of production and operations processes to overall design

  • Interact with automation design team to ensure electrical feasibility

  • Interface with outside teams and individuals to ensure all solutions comply with product design specifications

  • Generate revision-controlled schematics and user documentation

  • Project manage and collaborate with fellow project stakeholders

  • Conduct training for equipment operators and maintenance technicians

  • Troubleshoot, support and continuously improve existing automated solutions

Due to the amount of resources and expense exhausted in training for this position, a minimum of one year from the start of this position will be required before an associate is eligible for a job transfer.

Qualified candidates for this role will possess the following education, experience and skills:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering AND a minimum of 2 years relevant experience

  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)

  • Demonstrates full use of industry standards and procedures

  • Demonstrated proficiency and knowledge in use of engineering tools

  • Demonstrated use of Lean techniques in process development

  • Excellent problem-solving ability

  • Clear and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Must be team-oriented, possess a positive attitude and work well with others

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally on occasion

Other requirements include:

  • Participate in recruiting activities as assigned

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Previous experience with the following is preferred:

  • Electrical panel design

  • PLC, HMI programming

  • Controls and vision systems

  • VB, VB.net, C#, Java programming

Previous work or internship experience working in a manufacturing environment is highly preferred!
