Garmin Senior Mechanical Engineer - Area 51 in Olathe, Kansas

We are looking for a full-time Senior Mechanical Engineer to support our Area 51 Team at our headquarters in Olathe, Kansas. (a beautiful suburb of Kansas City). Area 51 is Garmin’s internal product Research & Development team. From kids wearables and hybrid watches to the latest lidar and sonar technologies, we are in constant pursuit of new markets and cutting edge technologies. As a senior mechanical engineer, you will support these product and technology concepts throughout the exploration stages until transferring it to the product team. If you’re looking for an opportunity to bring your unique skills and perspective to a team focused on learning and venturing into uncharted territory, we want to speak with you!\n\n\nEssential functions include:\n\n\n\t\n\tMust be passionate, enthusiastic and enjoy exploration and hands-on work\n\t\n\t\n\tMust effectively demonstrate a self-starting, results-oriented, positive, proactive, solution-focused approach\n\t\n\t\n\tMaster CAD-user able to complete the most difficult tasks\n\t\n\t\n\tAbility to customize existing, or develop new test methods to substantiate otherwise unverified aspects of product designs \n\t\n\t\n\tExplore innovative mechanical concepts and complete complex mechanical designs\n\t\n\t\n\tReview CAD assemblies for technical feasibility and apply first hand experience to risky items\n\t\n\t\n\tMock up and test complex mechanical systems to verify compliance with design requirements \n\t\n\t\n\tGood knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining, etc.\n\t\n\t\n\tGood knowledge of material requirements, material performance, and material limitations\n\t\n\t\n\tSpecify test plans to validate very complex systems with complex performance requirements \n\t\n\t\n\tExcellent tradeoff management skills and ability to mitigate risk\n\t\n\t\n\tAbility to make estimates on complex and risky Mechanical designs including: tooling, part cost, and design time \n\t\n\t\n\tExcellent communication skills with the ability to drive process vendors to evaluate complex mechanical designs and understand the risk\n\t\n\t\n\tKnowledgeable of Industry and Garmin product qualification tests (environmental and others)\n\t\n\t\n\tMakes substantial contributions toward determination of project goal/objective feasibility\n\t\n\t\n\tMentors and provides guidance to less experienced Mechanical Engineers (1 & 2) on all aspects of mechanical design\n\t\n\t\n\tProvides technical input to product development plans and concept documents\n\t\n\t\n\tProvides reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem solving techniques\n\t\n\t\n\tOffers process improvement suggestions and authors new procedures as required \n\t\n\t\n\tApplies good judgment in setting schedules and risk taking\n\t\n\t\n\tExemplifies Garmin’s Mission Statement and Quality Policy and proactively works to improve Garmin’s image and culture\n\t\n\t\n\tIndependently determines general approach and specific solutions to technical problems \n\t\n\t\n\tApplies knowledge of production and operations issues as they relate to engineering\n\t\n\t\n\tAssociates are expected to integrate, use, and provide feedback on products in development when possible as part of their normal job responsibilities\n\t\n\t\n\tLeads explorations of new technologies\n\t\n\t\n\tParticipate in recruiting activities as assigned\n\t\n\t\n\tPerform other job-related duties as assigned\n\t\n\t\n\tOverseas travel as required\n\t\n\n\n Qualified candidates possess a Bachelors of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Aerospace Engineering from a four-year college or university AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Other requirements include: \n\n\n\t\n\tExcellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)\n\t\n\t\n\tDemonstrated knowledge and capability to use CAD software for completing complex mechanical designs \n\t\n\t\n\tDemonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skill\n\t\n\n\nBonus points if you have:\n\n\n\t\n\tElectronic packaging design experience\n\t\n\n\nNever been to KC?
