Garmin Senior Optical Design Engineer in Olathe, Kansas

We are seeking a full-time Senior Optical Design Engineer to join our Aviation business segment at our at our world headquarters in the Kansas City area. This team passionately designs, develops and incorporates optics into next-generation aviation cockpit systems. In this role, you will be enabled to do hands-on design, build, test and validation with the goal of development toward mass production. Experience in head-up displays, cameras and the infrared spectrum is a plus for this role.\n\n \n\nEssential Functions:\n\n\n\t\n\tOptical system design, modeling, layout and optimization into aircraft cockpit environments - this includes established design skills in the areas of lens modules, aspheric lens design, prism design, projected graphics, coating selection and collimated optical systems\n\t\n\t\n\tUnderstanding of sequential and non-sequential optical designs, polarization, reflection and stray light mitigation\n\t\n\tThorough understanding in the use of precision optical tools used for high tolerance alignment in the manufacture of optical systems\n\tManage all aspects of optical system design and qualification to meet environmental and reliability requirements\n\tMay perform as a technical leader or Project Engineer on new projects that involve a new design or major changes to an existing design\n\tWork with mechanical engineering to consider tolerances, thermal, and dimensional space requirements\n\tWork with electrical engineering to integrate electro-optical displays, lighting and electronic components\n\tCollaborate and participate in design reviews, providing beneficial recommendations on optical design aspects and trade-offs.\n\tEvaluate new technologies as they apply to existing or future products leading to determination of project feasibility and provide technical input for product development plans and concepts\n\tPlan and develop experimental test programs to verify compliance to all applicable regulations and functional requirements.\n\t \n\t\n Basic Qualifications:\n\n\n\tBachelor of Science Degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Bachelor of Arts in Physics, OR degree in a related field, AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience\n\t\n\tPossess proficiency in the use of sequential and non-sequential optical simulation software tools (ZEMAX, CODE V, TracePro, ASAP or similar design tools)\n\t\n\t\n\tMust possess experience using light measurement test equipment and software tools for optical testing and characterization relevant to design optimization and quality documentation (radiometers, spectrometer, etc.).\n\t\n\n\nDesired Qualifications:\n\n\n\tKnowledgeable in photolithography, holography and diffractive optics\n\tCapable of mentoring and training other Optical Engineers when required\n\n\nGarmin International is an equal opportunity employer.
