JOB TITLE: Code Enforcement Officer JOB TYPE: Full-Time
REPORTS TO: City Manager STARTING RANGE: \$22.39 - \$24.63
Job Overview
Under the direction of the City Manager or other assigned department director or manager, this position
performs a wide variety of duties involved in the investigation of potential violations and the enforcement of
municipal codes, ordinances and regulations including building and zoning codes. This position performs office
and field work involving the inspection, investigation, and enforcement of applicable codes and ordinances
pertaining to nuisances, zoning, construction, parking, and related quality of life and public safety issues. This
position also provides customer service to residents, businesses, and other complainants in resolving concerns
and complaints.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Respond to inquiries and concerns on nuisance and code enforcement activities for the general public.
Respond to complaints related to violations of City codes and ordinances; conduct inspections; issue
notices of violations; make follow up inspections as necessary; work with violators to identify viable
solutions; issue citations as necessary following the established legal process.
Proactive inspections of residential, commercial businesses and vacant lots when able; ensure
compliance with applicable nuisance, temporary signage, and ordinances and regulations; perform
follow-up inspections as necessary; issue notices of violations as necessary.
Serve as a resource to other city departments regarding nuisance and code requirements.
Maintain detailed records and reports of inspections and enforcement activities; enter and retrieve
data on code enforcement activities; process and acquire data relative to inspections and effective
code enforcement.
Enforce seasonal activities such as weed enforcement, political sign removal and send notifications
when needed.
Participate in municipal court proceedings as needed for nuisance or code violation citations.
Other duties as assigned.
Section 1: Minimum Job Requirements
Must be at least 18 years of age and possess an insurable driving record
Minimum of High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written communications
Possess proficient computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office products and Google Suite
products; possess proficient office technology skills (printers, scanners, copiers, etc.)
Knowledge of occupational hazards and personal safety procedures
Possess excellent organization and time management skills

Possess the ability to learn, interpret, and apply local codes, laws and regulations.
Must be able to maintain professionalism when handling emotionally charged or difficult situations
Must be able to understand, interpret, and communicate legal description(s) or other formal or technical

Section 3: Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience in nuisance or code enforcement
Previous experience in public safety, such as police officer
Familiarity with municipal and/or state codes
Familiarity with basic city government operations
Section 4: Physical Requirements
This position spends long periods sitting at computer desks or in vehicles, and also requires some strenuous
physical exertion when performing inspections such as walking over rough or difficult terrain; recurring
standing, stooping, climbing or walking; and recurring lifting of moderately heavy items weighing between 25
and 75 pounds. Inspection work may require specific physical
characteristic and abilities such as heightened
strength, mobility, dexterity and full range of motion.
Section 5: Working Conditions
Work is performed in both office and field environments. This position routinely travels (drives) to various
inspection sites in the community and occasionally may be exposed to potential threats, hazardous chemicals
and infested conditions when conducting onsite inspections. Proper use of PPE may be necessary on some
investigations. This position works in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and extreme cold.
Section 6: Work Schedule
This position primarily works a standard office schedule, Monday through Friday.
